"I was a real bad kid. But we mostly moved 'cause of my mom's job, but also because I had problems and I fought almost everyday," I answered. "I'm gonna change that though."
"Oh, well, you're getting really far then. you've been here a couple weeks and you've only fought 1 person," Sadies said.
"Yeah, and he deserved it," Chrissy added with a smile.
I grinned back. "Yup, definitely."
We strolled to the dugout and sat down. "So Mercedes Brookes, how is your relationship with the Benny the Jet?" I asked in an interviewer's voice and shoved a fake microphone in her face.
"Well Alaska Adiego, if you must know, we are perfect. In fact, we're going on a date later," she smiled.
"Ooooh a daaaate," Chrissy taunted playfully, making kissy faces that sent us all giggling.
Sadies gathered herself. "So Chrissy, how're you and Timmy doing?"
"We're great. We went on a date last night. He's so cheesy, but it's adorable," she blushed.
"McClennan #3 still following you around, Laska?" Sadies asked.
"He's never followed me around," I argued.
"Example; you're always at my house and now he's constantly there. He never used to be home," Chrissy argued.
"Example 2: you draw him like honey draws flies," Sadies added.
"Even if he does like me a little bit, it doesn't matter because it's never gonna happen," I assured them.
"Why not?" Chrissy asked.
"He's just . . . not my type," I said.
"What do you mean he's not your type?" Sadies asked.
"Yeah you like Squints! Him and my brother are the same type; immature and hyper," Chrissy exclaimed.
"But I only like Squints a little bit. I don't like boys that chase me around. It takes the excitement of liking someone away," I explained and paused for a moment, then added, "I guess I have a thing for boys who don't like me."
"But Yeah-Yeah doesn't like you," Sadies argued. "He loves you!"
"Yeah, plus, I don't think there is one boy out there that doesn't think you're pretty," Chrissy said making me laugh.
"Yeah, except every one that has at least the sense of a billy goat," I replied.
"Then I guess boys are just as smart as goldfish," Sadies announced.
"Listen, it's real nice of you guys to try and make me feel pretty, but quit lying your butts off. I'm not even remotely pretty," I snapped at them.
"Alaska, why are you so hard-headed?" Chrissy asked.
"Because in a world of hate, stubbornness is the only thing that'll keep people from walking all over you," I answered.
"Boy, do you have your moments," Sadies joked.
I shrugged. "Why are the boys so late?"
"Who knows," Chrissy said. "I'm just surprised Benny isn't here yet."
"Yeah, and Yeah-Yeah too, you know, since he - " Sadies started.
"I know Sadies," I cut her off quickly, although I didn't really. I don't know why that kid could ever see anything in me. Nobody else ever does, so why should he? He barely even knows me. In fact, I feel like nobody even knows me. It's not that they don't bother to try to get to know me, there are definitely a few people out there who tried to understand and get me to open up, but I'm just not like that. I don't tell people about myself, because the less they know, the less they can judge.
He's probably mental, I thought to myself.
Sadies and Chrissy laughed.
"Hey, why do you like Squints, anyway?" Chrissy asked.
"You like me?" Squints' voice asked.
Chrissy, Mercedes, and I turned around to see all the boys. I blushed mad red. They all know now.
"N-No," I lied, stuttering. I glanced at Yeah-Yeah. He was blushing too, but he was staring at his shoes.
"Laska," Chrissy whispered and put her hand on my shoulder.
"Yes - no - I don't know," I tried to answer.
"But we heard you girls loud and clear," Kenny argued.
"Why do you care De Nunez?" I snapped at him.
He put his hands up in surrender and Bertram said, "We're just wondering because we heard you,"
The boys chattered in agreement except for Yeah-Yeah.
"Well this is my business, not yours," I growled.
"Why can't we know? I mean, sure, we all like you girls, but still," Timmy tried to persuade.
"But still," Tommy repeated.
"No. It's got nothing to do with any of you so stop," Chrissy told them.
"C'mon Doll Face, we just wanna know. Plus, it's not like any girl's actually liked Squints," Ham insisted.
"No way," I told them and spit at Ham's feet so they knew I was serious.
"Okay, okay, okay. Let's play some ball," Benny said and stood at home plate to bat.
Everyone took their regular positions; Timmy first base, Ham catcher, Kenny pitching, Bertram second base, Yeah-Yeah shortstop, Chrissy third base, Squints left field, Smalls left center, Tommy right, and I took right center. Sadies sat in the dugout and did something - I really don't know what she was doing.
"Okay De Nunez," Benny said, twirling the bat to show off.
"Alright Benny the Jet," Kenny mumbled as he wound up and fired the ball right down the strike zone. Benny swung and the crack of the bat was incredible. The ball sailed above all of our heads, but not far enough to go over Mr. Mertle's fence.
I ran after that ball and picked it up.
"Cut! Cut!" Bertram yelled. I threw the ball to him, but Benny was already at third. He was rounding it and heading home so Bertram threw the ball to Ham.
"Back off!" Ham yelled at Benny, who was sprinting back to third base. Hamilton threw the ball to Chrissy, catching Benjamin in a pickle.
"Not on my watch, Rodriguez," Chrissy exclaimed and ran after Benny, diving and just barely tagging him. He was out.
"Out!" Ham screamed in joy.
The Benny the Jet was out.
We all cheered for Chrissy. "Yeah Chrissy!" we all chattered.
Next up to bat was Chrissy.
