"I - I think I like Squints," Alaska admitted.

"Squints? Michael Palledorous? The Michael 'Squints' Palledorous I know?" I asked surprised.

"Yeah, I just - I don't know why, he just - I don't know. Help me, I dong want to like him," she tried to explain.

"Yeah okay, why don't you guys go on a date and then you'll probably know if you like him for sure or not," I suggested.

My brothers walked into my room. "Who are you talking to Christian?" Xavien asked.

"Yeah yeah, and why are you talking so loud? It's late," Yeah-Yeah rubbed his eyes.

"None of your business," I growled at them, then mumbled into the phone, "Sorry Laska, I got to go," and hung up.

Both of their eyes widened. "You're talking to Alaska?" Alan exclaimed.

Xavien pushed Yeah-Yeah back. "Really? Are you? Who is she going on a date with?"

"No one," I said brusquely, then added, "and get out of my goddamn room you bastards."

"Wait - I heard you say something about Squints," Xavien insisted. I quickly looked over at my other brother. His eyes looked glossy.

The kid might not have any brains, but he's not an idiot.

"I'm sorry Yeah-Yeah," I said sympathetically.

Xavien looked at Yeah-Yeah. He patted his back. "It's okay, man. She's just a girl."

Yeah-Yeah looked at him like he was crazy. "No she's not. She's not just any girl. There's something about her - I don't know what it is or why I love it about her. She's just different. And she's brave and fun and she's pretty. Of course I know that's she's so far out of my league, but - " his voice broke.

"Aw Alan," I engulfed him in a hug. "Its okay man, there's plenty of girls out there."

"Shut up," he snapped at me and stormed into his room. Xavien and I looked at each other wide-eyed.

"He really likes that girl," Xavien mumbled.

"You know you do too," I teased, trying to enlighten the mood but he just looked at me and shook his head.

"Night Christian," he said and walked into his and Yeah-Yeah's room.

What the heck is happening to my brothers? Xavien is actually acting mature and Yeah-Yeah actually likes a girl, but not just any girl. One of my best friends.

I tried to stop thinking about it and did my nightly routine, but as I layed in bed, the thoughts lingered in my head.

I shouldn't be worrying about my brothers, I just had an amazing date with Timmy Timmons, the boy of my dreams.

Alaska's POV

I was talking to Chrissy on the phone, but she had to hang up so I did my nightly routine. Should I really go on a date with Squints? But I still kinda like Benny too. But Sadies loves him and he loves her and they're together. I wouldn't do that to her. But I don't want to date Squints, I just like him a little bit, that's all.

I heard our front door slam downstairs and I knew my mom was home. I walked downstairs. "Hey mom."

"Hi Alaska," she greeted me sounding exhausted.

"Are you okay, Ma?" I asked and took her coat and hung it up in the closet.

"Yeah, just tired is all," she answered. "I know it's late Babe, but what do you want for dinner?"

"No Mom, it's okay. I'll make dinner tonight," I told her.

"No it's okay Laska," she tried to argue.

"Mom, I've got this," I insisted.

I ended up making Mac n Cheese, but she appreciated it. We sat at the table and ate quietly.

"Mom?"

"Yeah babe?"

"What do you do if you like a boy, but you love another boy but he's going steady with one of your best friends?" I asked.

She looked at me for a split second, but acted nonchalant. "If the boy you love is going with your best friend, you let them be. But as for the other boy that you like it wouldn't be fair to him if you see him but you love someone else," she advised.

"Thanks Mom," I took her plate and mine to the sink and washed them.

"Goodnight," she kissed the top of my head. "I love you."

"Love you too," I headed up to my room as she did as well.

I flopped onto my bed and read a book until I fell asleep.

I woke up at 7 am because I was used to my routine now and got ready. I walked downstairs and had a bowl of cereal.

I was ready at 8:00 and I headed to the sandlot with my bat, glove, and a ball. I practiced pitching to the backstop until I heard slow clapping behind me.

I turned around and saw Micah. "What do you want?" I asked as rude as I could.

"Whoa," he put his hands up in mock surrender. "I'm just here to say sorry."

His tone was overly-friendly.

"What do you really want, Bruce?" I asked again.

"Nothing," he said in the same tone. "I'm just sorry, Tiny."

"Tiny? Tiny? Are you trying to get a rise outta me?"

"Get lost Micah," I heard Chrissy's voice say sternly.

His eyes widened and he grumble, "This ain't over Adiego."

Once he was out of sight I turned around and saw Chrissy and Sadies. "Thanks you guys," I told them.

"No problem, but what's his problem?" Sadies asked.

"He's got nothing better to do," Chrissy answered.

"He seems like a total butt wipe," I said.

"He is one," Chrissy said.

"No, that's an understatement. He seems like a used tampon," Sadies argued, sending us into uncontrollable laughter.

"Why does he keep buggin' you, Laska?" Chrissy asked.

"Probably because I punched him," I answered. "Man, I thought that moving from New York was gonna help me change, but it's only helped a little."

"What do you mean?" Sadies asked.

"I was a real bad kid. But we mostly moved 'cause of my mom's job, but also because I had problems and I fought almost everyday," I answered. "I'm gonna change that though."

"Oh, well, you're getting really far then. you've been here a couple weeks and you've only fought 1 person," Sadies said.

"Yeah, and he deserved it," Chrissy added.
