I woke to the annoying sound of a ringing phone.
"Ughhhh," I groaned, getting out of bed groggily. I answered the call and heard a familiar voice. "Hello?" asked the voice.
"Hello, who is this?" I asked as I yawned.
"Mercedes Brooks," they answered. My eyes widened and I instinctively looked over at Alaska, who was still sleeping.
"Hello?" she asked again.
"Uh-uh sorry. What's up?" I replied.
"Uhm, can I ask you a question?"
"Yeah, sure."
"D-Does Alaska h-hate me?" she asked.
I felt bad for the poor girl, it's not like she meant to cause anything. "I don't know, it's just, well, she really likes Benny and he liked her too, but now he likes you," I said, trying to explain what I knew to the best of my abilities.
"Oh," she sighed. "I'm sorry, I should've never gone on that date with Benny."
"No, no, really it's fine," I told her. "He would still like you and you can't do anything to change that. Just be happy, okay? I'll talk some sense into her, I promise."
"Okay, thank you so much Chrissy, it means a lot, sincerely," she said and I could hear it in her voice that she was smiling.
"Don't sweat it," I said and hung up.
I sat in my mitt-shaped bean bag chair and fidgeted with the tag. I wanted so badly to call Timmy, but I didn't want to like him. I sighed softly and stood up. I walked over to my closet and rummaged through a box where I kept the few books I had. I'm not a book person, so there were only about 5. I finally found the one I was looking for. My yearbook. I flipped through the pages until I found Timmy. He looked so adorable in his school picture. I was swooning over him for a while, until I saw a shadow block the morning light. I looked up. Oh crap, it was Alaska.
She smirked and I saw a spark of mischief in her eyes.
"Don't you dare!" I warned her.
"Chrissy and-" she shouted at the top of her lungs, but I cut her off by jumping up quickly and throwing my hand over her mouth.
She laughed and pried free of my grip. "I knew you liked-no, loved Timmy Timmons!" she whisper-yelled.
I groaned. "Shut up," I told her.
"I don't shut up, I grow up, and when I look at you I throw up! Ahhhh!" she said, pointing into her open mouth.
I rolled my eyes at her. "Let's get ready to go to the sandlot," I said.
"Okay," she said. "But I get to shower first!"
"Fine," I replied. "C'mon, follow me." I walked into the hallway and got a towel for her from our closet. Then I walked to our bathroom and showed her how to work the shower.
Eventually, we both got ready and headed to the sandlot. We approached the dugout and sat down, waiting for the boys. We were just talking about Xavien mostly and eventually Sadies appeared. She sat down next to me and I greeted her. "Hi Sadies."
"Hey Chrissy, hi Alaska," she said.
Alaska stayed silent and I saw a quick frown pass quickly across her mouth. She rolled her eyes and looked away from Mercedes. I gave her a look that said, 'stop.'
Eventually, she sourly said, "So Mercedes, how's Benny been?"
I glanced quickly at Sadies. She wore a hesitant expression, but managed to sputter out, "G-Good."
