Chapter fourteen ~ edited

Four days later...

I had been running in a god damn circle for ages. I know Caleb was trying to get me to join up, but seriously. I was going to keep running around and annoy him a bit, but it has annoyed me instead. I started licking and chewing, showing him I knew he was boss. I slowed down to a walk and he turned his back to me. I walked up to him and waited for a reward. He gave me a sugar cube and a pat.

"Good girl." He said. I waited for what we had to do next. He walked to the fence, where his younger brother Brent was standing and watching. He grabbed a pink rope halter and a bright blue lead from his brother. They looked new. I looked at them curiously. "Hey girl. I bought these for you. So don't go breaking them or anything like that." Caleb said as he put the halter on. He led me around the round pen at a walk, then a trot. We walked back to Brent. "Come on bro. Time for you to help." Caleb informed Brent.

"Alright. If I get hurt i'm blaming you." Brent said.

"Yeah, yeah what ever. Just get your ass in here."

I watched Brent slowly approach me. I put my ears forward with interest. He looked scared of me. I nickered and walked up to him dragging Caleb along with me.

"Hey girl." Brent said to me. He looked at Caleb. "So what am I doing bro?"

"I need you to help me get her used to other people. She only comes to me and obviously you too. She won't go near Trent or Nick." Caleb said as he unclipped the lead from my halter.

"Caleb. I don't blame her. They are both jerks to horses." Brent said.

"I know but he's my boss. I can't get fired or it's bad news for her."

"Dude. Buy her."

"Well she has the hots for the stallion from her herd." I snorted and took his hat off his head and trotted away from them. "Hey! Give that back!" Caleb said, surprised. Brent laughed.

"Good girl." Brent said to me. "That's payback for what you said bro." He said to Caleb. I dropped Caleb's hat in the dirt.

"Thanks miss." Caleb said. He picked up his hat and brushed the dirt off. "As I was saying, she is friends with the stallion and to separate them forever would be devastating on their part, so that would mean buying both horses." Caleb said to his brother.

"So?" Brent asked.

"Do you want to be the one asking dad if we can get a couple thousand dollars for each horse? Plus there is food, tack, vet bills, farrier bills and so on. Even with both of us working it's not enough. And we can't keep asking for money." I snorted. There wasn't much training and a lot of talking. I was standing in the sun, waiting for these two to shut up and continue on with the training. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Shimmer."

I got named yesterday. My coat was a grey and white with white spots on the darker shades. My muzzle was grey and my legs were black from the knee down. My mane and tail were black with white in it too. I was guessing I got named Shimmer because of the spots. It was ok, I guess.

"When are you getting her used to a saddle?" Brent asked Caleb.

"Soon. I want to get her used to being groomed first. She needs a good brush." Caleb said. I stomped my foot. They both looked at me. "Well you do."

"Maybe you do too." I snorted. They both laughed. What was so funny?

"Come on. Let's groom you." Brent said. Caleb clipped the lead onto my halter and tied me to a wooden rail outside the stable where they tacked up their horses. He got a body brush and let me smell it. I snorted and moved my head away. Like I wanted to smell a brush!

They spent half an hour brushing me. I just stood there. I hadn't seen Midnight for a while. Ever since training started I hadn't seen any of the herd. I felt lonely. Yet I had Stride and a few other horses with me. They untied me and took me to my stall.

"I'll come back to feed you and the others soon." Caleb told me. He gave me a pat on my muzzle then walked away with his brother. I put my head over the door. I looked around for any horses I'd seen in the herd.

"You ok?" Stride asked.

"I don't know." I answered.

"You'll see him again. Don't worry"

"Huh?"

"I know you want to see Midnight."

"Yeah."

"He's quite a rebel."

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I heard Trent talking about how Midnight was a pain. Apparently he broke out a couple times and also he tried to kick Nick."

"Did he miss?" I asked.

"Yep. Nick jumped out of the way." Stride said.

"What a shame." I said.

"I know."

I stood at the door and waited for Caleb to come and give me food. I wondered where Midnight was. I wondered how my family were. I always wanted to be a horse. Now I didn't. My first experience as a horse was being captured.
