Father Choi
Father Choi took two steps at a time, climbing the stairs to Soo-Jin's apartment as fast as he could. He was already out of breath, having hurried over from the church, but he didn't dare pause. After he had held service in the morning there had been several missed calls from Soo-Jin and some alarming messages.
We need to talk. Attached was a picture of a newspaper article about Yong-Hoo.
Did you know about this?
Call me back. Urgent.
Where are you? Why are you not answering your phone?
You know what, fuck this. I'm out! Don't call back.
Of course he had tried to call her, but she hadn't picked up the phone. They were in big trouble. For some reason he had thought she knew, that she had seen Yong-Hoo in some newspaper or on TV, or at least that the topic of his occupation had been mentioned before. If she really hadn't known, the news must have been very upsetting for her. Having gotten to know about her character and her personal situation, he could imagine that she was very hurt, confused and pretty angry, too. Not only at Yong-Hoo, but also at him, who she would think accomplice. Still she had reached out to him, but he had not answered. This much stress could not be good for her condition.
All these thoughts raced through his head until he finally reached her floor. He came to an halt, facing a hallway with identical looking doors- without nameplates. The nameplates at the entrance of the building had given away at which floor the residents lived, but not at which apartment. Curtly he turned to his door on the left and knocked on it. One of Soo-Jin's neighbors would surely know more, right? He was about to turn away and try the next apartment, when the door was opened. An elderly lady stuck her head out the door.
"Hello, yes?"
"Hello, Ma'am, I am sorry to bother you. I am looking for Miss Min Soo-Jin, could you happen to know which apartment she lives in?"
The woman eyed him critically. "And who are you to her?"
"I am Father Choi, a friend of her's. She is not answering her phone and I have reason to believe someting might have happened to her."
The woman seemed hesitant but then nodded. "Actually Soo-Jin is here with me right now. She is not feeling well, so I will check with her first. Wait here."
Father Choi sighed in relief as the door was closed. She was safe! He heard steps and voices inside and then the door was opened again. The elder lady reappeared. "Soo-Jin is too weak to stand up right now but says she wants to talk to you. You can come in."
He bowed to the woman, thanking her, and followed her into the apartment.
"She's here in the living room", the woman said from the other side of the corridor. "Do you want something to drink?"
"No thank you, I don't want to cause any inconvenience", he answered while taking off his shoes. It was then, when something caught his eye. He kneeled down and reached for the little, rainbow colored ball. He picked it up and turned it in his hand- it was a bead with a little smiley face on it. His heart sank to his knees- no way this was a coincidance. Suspision and fear rose in him. Someting told him that it was not Soo-Jin waiting for him in that room. The priest got up and clasped the bead tightly, taken over by a newly found determination. This time he would listen to his gut feeling. This time he would fight.
