Soo-Jin

As she had announced, Soo-Jin went back to the church the next day to talk to Father Choi about her plans to help. She had had all night to think of the right words to make this whole thing as convincing as possible. That included explaining in detail all the ways she could be of service and reminding the priest that she needed protection until they had taken care of her demon. Of course that excluded Yong-Hoo's negative reaction. She did not know wether the both of them had talked and if the priest knew about his friend's rejection on this matter, but nonetheless Father Choi seemed open to the idea. After he had warned her several times and she had assured him in all his doubts, he agreed to her "internship".

A couple of hours later it was her turn to have doubts. Soo-Jin was sitting in a cold, damp vault under the church, sorting files and books. This was not really what she had expected. Father Choi on the other hand, who was handing her documents to store in cardboard boxes, seemed content with this work. The quiet and tranquil atmosphere matched his nature and Soo-Jin found it hard to believe he was the same priest, who had dominantly forced a demon out of a human body not even 24 hours ago.

She suddenly realized she had been staring at him for some time now when he turned around. Blushing, she followed his gaze to the door, which opened seconds after. Yong-Hoo stepped into the room but stopped in his tracks when he saw who was standing beside his friend.

"Really?" He said to her boldy, crossing his arms.

She had to hold back an evil grin and looked at Father Choi instead.

"Don't tell me you are letting her help. She is not even going to be of any help, she is just going to stand in the way!"

The priest continued his work, unbothered of his friend's tantrum. Maybe he was just used to him being a diva or maybe he had a level of patience she would never be able to have herself. Whatever it was, Soo-Jin really gave him props for it.

"It's a bad idea." Was Yong-Hoo pouting?

"I disagree. It is her decision to be part of this, just as it was ours. Plus, I think we could really use some extra hands right now. Speaking of it", Father Choi pointed at the packed cardboard boxes, "these are ready to go."

Yong-Hoo seemed as if he wanted to say something, but then took a deep breath instead. He grabbed one of the boxes and left the room, doing as he had been told.

Was this it? Was she good now? Expecting his resistace she had already prepared a speech for her defense. Was it really possible that he had given in to his friend like this because he trusted his judgement? It occured to her that the two men might be more close than she had assumed. Which was good for her, because it made it easier to get to know what kind of person Yong-Hoo really was...

To Soo-Jin's regret the priest wasn't too talkative when it came to anything other than his work. Although she was not able to find out much about Yong-Hoo, she at least was well informed about the situation and the enemy they were facing: Father Choi, Yong-Hoo and their mentor, Father Ahn, had had the "pleasure" of making the dark bishop's acquaintance when he was roaming around town less than a year ago. That man had been responsible for innumerable deaths and misery and they were still busy cleaning up his mess. But- and this point was crucial- Yong-Hoo had killed that dark bishop, which made everything even more confusing. If he really was still alive it meant that they were dealing with an evil force that was beyond what any of them could ever imagine. Something that the big guys from the Vatican would have to handle, since this was way out of this little team's league. So before giving false alarm they had to be 100% sure this was not a bluff, which they were currently trying to do by searching through all the bibliography the church had to offer.

Since this was some type of "top-secret" mission, they had turned Yong-Hoo's apartment into their private library. Neither of them really knew what exactly it was they were searching for, but Father Choi had named some things they should be looking out for.

While she was scanning the old, yellowish pages, her mind kept wandering to what the priest had told her when Yong-Hoo had went to the bathroom and the two of them had been alone. In a quiet voice he had matter-of-factly given her a crash-course her on "Stigmata" and advised her not to bring this topic up in Yong-Hoo's presence. Now she could understand why he had reacted so strangely after he had exorcised the demon in that alley, because he had done it with the help of the Stigmata, which he thought had disappeared.

All this could have been reason to overthink her complete, atheistic view of the world, but Soo-Jin just pragmatically took things as they were. She didn't want to spend the very limited time she had on this earth getting mentally caught up in all of it. What counted for her was that she felt of use, which she hadn't since she had had to quit her job. And more than that, it thrilled her in this weird kind of way that she had never felt before, made her feel alive, and she wanted to keep this feeling as long as possible.

She could not help but wonder how Yong-Hoo was feeling about it though. Being given this power and then suddenly having it ripped away for no reason... Of course it was no excuse for his rude behavior but she could empathise very well on the feeling of being at the mercy of something so out of one's own control. This shared destiny made her even more curious about him and if not in his words, she desperately tried to find some answers in his eyes. When she and Father Choi called it a day and made their way home Soo-Jin felt disappointed and frustrated. Yong-Hoo had not looked at her even once.
