Yong-Hoo
Yong-Hoo waited until Soo-Jin was seated on the passenger seat and then turned on the engine. Father Choi had wanted to stay behind to talk to Mrs. Park and her uncle, who both were in shock. His friend had said that he would take the bus, so he himself had offered Soo-Jin a ride home.
The girl had not said a word, which probaly didn't mean anything good, given her quick tongue. He hoped that she was not too deeply traumatized, but also on the other hand, that she would at least now let all of this go.
"You saved this man's life." He didn't just want to fill the awkward silence but actually appreciated her quick reaction. He had never seen anything like that in real life before.
She nodded, but then, as if she had finally regained her wit, added cockily, "Well, I'm good at my job."
He looked at her in surprise. "You are a doctor?"
"Technically a junior doctor, but yes. Why are you so surprised?"
He shrugged, looking back on the road. He could not imagine her as a doctor. To be honest, he had not really given much thought about her at all.
"Actually, you two saved his life too. But damn, this was really intense! Is it always like that?"
Pictures flashed before his eyes. It wasn't always like that. There was much, much worse. "More or less. Anyways," he changed the topic, "you should keep your end of the deal."
Soo-Jin sighed. "I guess that's just fair." She pulled an envelope out of her bag. "I made a drawing of him and wrote down everything I could remember." She placed the envelope on the console between them and Yong-Hoo had to resist the urge to stop the car and open it.
"Can I ask you something?" It blurted out before he could really think about it. Soo-Jin turned to him in suprise.
"My number?"
"What?" He blinked, baffled.
Soo-Jin laughed. "I was just joking, relax. Ask."
He coughed, slightly thrown off. "What did the demon offer you?"
He could feel her tense up beside him and knew, he had gone too far. "You don't have to answer." Awkward he scratched the back of his neck. "Anyways, you chose to spare my life. Thank you."
For a second they locked eyes and he quickly looked back at the road.
"You should be. That's why you are going to let me help you."
"Not this again..." He sighed heavily. "Wasn't what you saw today enough? Why would you want to be part of this?"
But she simply ignored him. "Just view it as an internship. Exactly, I want to be your intern. Just don't make me get you coffee-"
"No." He cut her off. "I'm serious, no." He parked the car and turned the engine off, frustration rising inside him.
"I should have asked Father Choi in the first place. Let's see what he thinks about it, I don't think he is going to say no."
"I am." He glared at her with an intimidating, serious gaze but she confidently withstood it.
"That's not going to stop me." She got out of the car, ending the conversation. She took a step towards her apartment to escape his lecture, but he rushed after her and grabbed her arm, stopping her from walking off.
"Hey, I'm talking to you!" He had not meant to raise his voice but her stubbornness infuriated him. "Is this a joke to you? You really don't care about your life at all, do you?"
She freed her arm abruptly. It seemed as if she was about to snap at him, the way her eyes were gleaming angrily, but instead she turned around and walked off.
"Thanks for the ride. See you soon", she said without looking at him and waving back, before disappearing in her apartment complex.
Yong-hoo cursed under his breath and was about to turn around and get back into his car, when an elderly woman stepped up to him.
"You should be ashamed of yourself!" She gestured energetically, which caused the watering can in her hands to spill over onto his shoes.
"Excuse me?" He asked formally, taken aback by this stranger's sudden accusation.
"You really should not talk to a dying girl like that, you punk!"
He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. "I don't understand..."
The woman sighed, giving him a scolding look. "Don't you know she is sick? Brain tumor." Her eyes wandered to the spot where Soo-Jin had disappeared and her gaze softened. "Doctors say it's a miracle she's still alive. Poor thing could die any second... May the Lord have mercy on her soul..."
Speechless Yong-hoo just bowed and got back into his car. How was he supposed to know that? Still, his bad conscience was hammering in his brain, demanding him to go and apologize to her. He looked out the window at the huge apartment complex and shook his head at the idea of ringing up every resident to find her. She was tough, she would get over it.
The white envelope caught his eyes and he ripped it open. Inside there was a list, written in neat, black letters, that he quickly scanned over. He turned the page and found the drawing. He just stared at the familiar face, that he would rather forget. This was not possible. He had killed him with his own hands.
Fury arose and he could hear Father Ahn's voice in the back of his head, as he had repeated the name over and over again in their conversations. The dark bishop.
