Yong-Hoo
While he pressed the buzzer to let Soo-Jin in, Yong-Hoo mentally prepared himself for a long day full of investigative questions and unpredictable behaviour, which -he could swear- was just for his provocation. He took a deep breath to calm himself down and made the resolution to listen to Father Choi's appeal and be a little more friendly.
He had to admit that Soo-Jin had turned out to not be completely useless. She had invented a clever system that made it a lot easier to work through the loads of books. Plus, she was taking all of this serious without losing her shit. But he could not deny that knowing about her critical state had not played a part in accepting her help. Who was he to deny her the wish that maybe was her last?
Soo-Jin stepped into his apartment, interrupting his thoughts. He returned her smile but it felt unfamiliar and fake to him, like a grimace.
"Where is Father Choi?" She asked behind him, following him into the living room.
"He has service in church so he's not going to come today."
She nodded and took the seat across from him. Yong-Hoo was waiting for a comment or one of her usual jokes, but instead she just silently grabbed a book. They quietly started working and after some time his early relief turned into uneasy tension. As uncomfortable her inappropriate jokes could make him feel sometimes, by now he would have gladly taken those if it meant her being her usual, bubbly self. Was it him? Did he make her feel uneasy? As much as he disliked that thought he could not think of the right thing to do or say. He chose to ignore this awkward urge and focus on his task. After a while he got used to her presence and his body relaxed while his mind submerged into the words in front of him.
He did not know how much time had passed when he came back to reality. It had started to dawn already, which meant that they had spent the whole day researching. Yong-Hoo looked up to Soo-Jin, who was still reading. She wore headphones and her head was lightly bouncing to the beat of the music, her lips slightly pouted.
He tapped the page she was reading with his finger, trying to get her attention. She blinked confused, slowly coming back to reality.
"Are you hungry? How about we order something?" He asked after she had removed her headphones.
Soo-Jin just shrugged. "Okay."
"What do you want to eat?"
"I don't really care, I'll take what you want." With that she put her headphones back in and went back to reading.
Yong-Hoo hovered between confusion and frustration about her strange behavior. Although he had to admit that maybe this was on him because he had not really been a good host. So when the food arrived, he insisted on paying to make up for it. He had ordered a variety of meals, not knowing what Soo-Jin would like, even though she had told him she would eat anything.
"Why are you being nice all of a sudden?" She gave him a wary look, eyeing the huge amount of food the two of them were never going to be able to eat.
He didn't really know how to answer that, since he really had not been particularly nice to her before. But it wasn't as if he was a bad guy overall. "Just eat."
Given her reaction, she must have been hungry, because she did not hold back. Yong-Hoo watched in fascination while she emptied the dishes, eating about as much as he did. Usually when he went out to eat with women they mostly ordered light food and then didn't even finish it.
"What?" She had caught him staring.
He gulped, awkward. "You eat well, that's all."
"Hey, I was starving!", she defended herself.
