Father Choi

Father Choi ended the service when the last guest left. He sat down on one of the stone benches of the cemetery and rubbed his face. It had felt wrong for him to hold this funeral, being the one that had been responsible for her death. Well, partially responsible, but responsible nonetheless. He had failed to save her.

He looked around, hoping to see a familiar face. He could really use a friend right now. He had hoped Yong-Hoo would come but had not expected him to. His friend had a lot on his mind right now. His unbelievable success to exorcise a demon with nothing but his words was overshadowed by his guilt and pain. Father Choi wished he could help him, but he had his own problems now. A priest that became a suspect to the police because of his connection with too many unexplainable tragedies. It sounded like a bad joke.

He looked up to the sky, at the weak rays of sunlight that fought their way through blue spots of grey clouds. Although he and Yong-Hoo felt like crap right now, he had this deep sense of certainty that it would pass and show the good of it: Yong-Hoo's powers and also his own. In comparison to his friend it might seem unspectacular, but he too had mastered something that had seemed impossible to him. The strength he had felt when he had fought Mrs. Kim's demon, a confidence in himself that he had lacked before, was now shining through him. His fears were still there, but they seemed so insignificant. For the first time he felt really, truly strong.

Using this motivational rush he stood up to head to the hospital. He wanted to be there when Soo-Jin woke up from the coma. She would wake up, he was sure of it, it was just a matter of time. Her body and soul needed to heal from the trauma she had suffered. At least she was alive. One could call it luck- that her neck had not broken, that he had known the code to Yong-Hoo's door lock and had found them in time, that the ambulance had arrived so quickly- but Father Choi knew that it was God's work.

The priest easily found his way to the ward Soo-Jin was at. He sat down on one of the empty seats in the hallway and took out his rosemary. He could wait. He would come every day until she woke up. He knew that it rose even more suspicion about him but he just had to be there for her when she woke up. She had been through so much and there was no one who would believe her, no one who would understand her, like he did. Well, except Yong-Hoo...

He was in the middle of a prayer when he noticed a change of energy. He had not paid much attention to the previous doctors that had hurried by, but now there seemed a bit too many. Every elevator brought more and more until the gathering occupied the whole hallway. There was a word that jumped around from one conversation to the other, the only audible word in the buzzing mumbling: miracle. His heart was beating fast but he tried to get up as naturally as possible. His feet moved to the water fountain, that was as near to the crowd as he could possibly get, while his ears desperately tried to get a hold on what was happening.

"Show me the last MRI scan again- look, you can see how big it is-"

"How is that possible? The tumor has completely disappeared! There is not even a sign it was ever there-"

"What?! Impossible!"

Father Choi tried to stop his hands from shaking. Let's not rush to conclusions, they could be talking about anybody.

"How about her blood levels? There must be something!"

"They even repeated the tests because it seemed like a mistake..."

"Wasn't there suspicion of suicide?"

"Min Soo-Jin? I think I went to college with her..."

"She's awake now, right? I would really like to talk to her."

"It's a miracle!"

Father Choi led his rosemary to his heart. It was indeed a miracle.
