Father Choi

Father Choi was leaning on Yong-Hoo's car in front of Soo-Jin's apartment, waiting for her to come out. Yong-Hoo was standing next to him, scrolling through his phone. He was as quiet as usual but Father Choi had the feeling that he was breeding something out. It had taken him some time but he had managed to develope a certain sense for Yong-Hoo's different kinds of silences.

"How did things go with Soo-Jin yesterday?", he carefully asked.

"It went alright", his friend answered tersely, without looking up from his phone.

"Good to hear. You seem to be fine with her coming along."

Yong-Hoo just shrugged his shoulders and Father Choi had to suppress a sigh.

"Do you dislike her that much or what is your problem with her?"

Finally his friend looked up at him. "Do I really have to reply to that? She is impulsive and unpredictible and-"

"-she gets under your skin."

"I wanted to say provocative. I just want to get this over with without any of us getting hurt."

"You know", Father Choi refused to change topic, "actually you two are quiet alike."

"What?!"

"Excuse me...", someone interrupted them. A young man approached the two, bowing politely.

"Are you Park Yong-Hoo?" The boy looked up to Yong-Hoo, ignoring the priest, who was already used to that.

"Yes", his friend replied, putting his phone away.

"Could I maybe have an autograph?"

"Sure."

Father Choi, feeling out of place, stepped away from the two to give them some privacy. He saw Soo-Jin come out of the building and went towards her to take her bag.

"Thank you", she said, a little out of breath.

He nodded and smiled at her. "Are you ready?"

"Yes, and super hyped. I packed some food in case we get hungry." She lifted the other bag, the one she was holding, and wiggled her eyebrows.

Father Choi lauged. "That's great, thanks. Your energy is a welcome change."

Together they stepped to Yong-Hoo, who was shaking the boy's hand. The priest packed Soo-Jin's bags in the trunk and went back to them. Both of them were looking after the boy walking off.

"So, that's your type..." Soo-Jin looked Yong-Hoo up and down. "It all makes sense now."

It took both of the men a moment until they understood what Soo-Jin meant. It seemed as if Yong-Hoo had just given his number to the young man. Father Choi laughed out loud while Yong-Hoo's ears got bright red.

"It's not like that! I'm not ga- Just get in the damn car..."

She giggled but did as told. Yong-Hoo gave the priest a meaningful look. But his friend just smiled at him and friendly patted his shoulder. "Fighting!"

They got into the front seats, while Soo-Jin sat in the back. Following the car's navigation system, they got on their way. None of them spoke, so Father Choi turned on the radio to lighten up the mood. But when they got into a traffic jam, not even the enthusiastic voice of the radio moderator could lift their spirits. The priest turned off the radio and decided to break the silence and fill them into the details about the upcoming mission. He told them that Mrs. Min had asked her priest for advice because her son had been behaving strange lately. Father Choi cited her words, that he had always been a little different than the other kids and been interested in dark things, but lately she had caught him doing some strange form of ritual, which had concerned her.

"So, we don't even know if he is really possessed?", Yong-Hoo interjected.

"No, we don't. Even if he isn't, and let's hope that for the boy's sake, maybe we can help by talking some sense into him."

"How old is he?", Soo-Jin asked from the back.

"16." The priest turned around but froze, wide eyed. "Soo-Jin, are you okay? Your nose is bleeding!"

The girl, who hadn't seemed to notice, touched her nose in surprise to find what Father Choi had said was true. Quickly she cupped her nose to prevent the blood from spilling. In a matter of seconds, Yong-Hoo had pulled the car over and she got out, as did the two men.

"There are some tissues in my bag in the trunk."

Father Choi moved fast, getting the bag she had mentioned. Inside there were several utensils.

"What is all this for?" Yong-Hoo asked from the side, while Father Choi fished the tissues out of the bag and handed them to Soo-Jin.

"As the medic of this group I should be prepared, right? Who knows what could happen."

Father Choi handed her more tissues, as the one she was using was already soaked in blood. He looked at her concerned. "Are you okay?" He asked again.

"Yeah, it's nothing, it just happens from time to time. It should stop soon. Sorry."

"You don't have to apologise." He didn't quiet believe her, in his eyes she looked very pale. "I'll get you some water." He went to the trunk and got her a bottle. When he returned, the two were quietly talking about something, which he was partially able to overhear.

"Are you sure you are alright?" Yong-Hoo asked Soo-Jin but she waved him off. Her eyes met Father Choi's and she turned away from Yong-Hoo.

"Thanks." She took the bottle and drank some water.

After her nose stopped bleeding, she cleaned herself up and they all got back into the car. The traffic jam had dissolved, which seemed somehow metaphorical to the priest. They continued their silent drive but he made sure to check on Soo-Jin every now and then. To his surprise he caught Yong-Hoo checking the rearview mirror a little more often than usual. The priest scratched his chin. Maybe he had misinterpreted the situation. Maybe it wasn't Yong-Hoo's problem that he didn't like her- maybe it was his problem that he did.
