My 4-year long streak of not having anyone attempt to be my friend was rudely ended 10 minutes into my stay at the SSCC (as I'd learned it was called).
I was seated on my bed, claiming the bottom bunk after that overdressed kid got the solo bed. The kid above me dropped down from his bunk, and I recognized him as the boy who had been awkwardly talking to that girl.
"What's your name?" he asked.
I did everything in my power to not roll my eyes. "Why does it matter?"
The guy slightly hissed. One of the disadvantages of having not spoken to anyone other than Jaeseok (including the court, unfortunately, who couldn't get a word out of me) was that I tended to be blunt.
The guy spoke again. "I don't know if you noticed, but we're going to be stuck together for the next two months. So you can either try to be a decent human being or my mortal enemy."
I really did not want to give him what he asked for. But still, he would probably actually leave me alone. If I wanted to survey the area later, I didn't need him pestering me. "Bae Jinyoung. That's my name."
"Kim Yonghee. Go fuck yourself."
Well, wasn't he a delight? "Okay, angsty teen."
He left me alone after that. Even after lights out, nobody in the cabin moved a muscle when I slipped out the door and walked around the campsite.
The actual campsite was pretty deserted. There was only a handful of tents out, so it didn't take much guessing to figure out which belonged to the camp leader.
On his second circle around, Jaeseok called him.
"Hi," I sighed, finally having a familiar voice to hear.
"Of course you're not in bed," Jaeseok huffed. "When have you ever followed rules?"
"That's not the point," I answered.
Jaeseok scoffed. His tone shifted, however. "Are you having fun?"
"I made a friend."
"Oh. Oh... that's..."
"Yeah."
"Well," Jaeseok moved past it. "Are you going to stay?"
"Yeah." I didn't hesitate, to my own surprise. "I think I will."
