Fireflies in The Field of Higanbana (Mikey X Reader)

Chapter 1

-Mikey's POV-

[Where am I?], he looked around as the only thing he saw was darkness surrounding him. He furrowed his brows as he noticed he could still see his own hands when he raised them. His ears then heard giggles from behind him, yet the time he turned his head, he saw no one there, [Who's there?!]. The giggles ceased as he looked around trying to figure out what was happening. Clenched his fists, he saw a pair of fireflies flew past him. Following where those fireflies flew, his eyes widened when saw familiar figures, [N-nii-san..E-emma...?]. He froze there when saw them smile at him before start walking away, vanishing one by one, [W-wait! Don't go!!]. Running as fast he could, yet for some reason he could feel how heavy and slow he is when trying to catch up to them.

[P-please don't leave me!! Nii-san!!! Emma!!], he could feel tears swelling up in his eyes as he was still running. The time he was about to catch them, he felt someone grab hold his hand. He saw those chubby tiny hands as his eyes then looked at her, [nii-chan.. Don't go]. The child looked up at him in worry as he looked at her confused, [Who are you? What do you mean?]. His eyes back looking at where he saw his brother went. There he froze in fear when saw his brother turned into a big tall dark figure. He then feel another hand grab his hand, [Run..]. He looked at the young woman in front of him, [Who are you?]. [Mikey, run! Now!], she pulled his hand. Red eyes with sharp teeth that keep growing, the time it jumped on him, he woke up with cold sweats.

His hands clutch tight the sheet as he is breathing heavily. Sitting up, his trembling hand tried to slicked the hair back, "...what the hell was...that...". He mumbled as he tried his best to calm himself. It took a long time before he could regain his composure. Hearing the knocks on the door, he then saw Sanzu walk in, "You up already? That's rare..". Mikey sighed as he just got up from his bed, "What is it?". "It's about the new gang from Roppongi..", Sanzu came closer as he handed him a package of sandwiches that he seemed to have bought. Sat on the couch, he is trying to listen as much as he could, yet he couldn't help getting sleepy, "Enough. Have you informed, Koko?". "I did. So what should we do? Should we attack them back right now?", he was silent for a moment, "No not yet.. Let's wait and see for now like Koko said.. But tell everyone to gather at the usual place".

Decided to take a walk after finishing that long meeting, he knew if he complained, Koko would just gonna nagging him. 'Ah some taiyaki would be great-', "AAAAAAAA?!", startled by the sudden high pitched scream. He stopped on his tracks as he looked at the source of the voice. He could see a small child crouched down there with horror on her face. She then looked up at him with an upset look as she got up and pointed her tiny shovel at him, "YOU RUINED JOHN HOUSE!!! MEANIE!!!". "Ha?? What on earth you saying, kid?", he looked at her displeased as he could see her flinched when he gave her a slight glare. Yet to his surprise, she glared back with those trembling knees, " YA GOTTA 'POLOGISE!!!".

Walking closer to her, he saw how her expression changed a little when he towering her with that cold expression. Clearly she scared of him but then again he heard her gasped and shout, "Staph!! You are stepping John!!!". Her little hands tried to push him away as his eyes then looked down to where he is standing, "Get off!! John!!!!". His eyes now then see how he is apparently passed by the sandbox where children usually playing and he has stepped on the tiny piles of sands that she seems has been built up, "You-". "Ruri!!", hearing another feminine voice, his eyes looked up and saw a woman that seems his age running towards them. '....her voice...sounds familiar...'

-End of Mikey's POV-

You left your little sister for a brief moment for the toilet and oh how your face turned pale when saw her with a young man wearing a gang uniform that your sister was trying to push away, 'Oh God...'. "Ruri!!!", you hurriedly run towards her. "Nee-chan?", hearing your voice sure stops the little girl from pushing the guy away. You hurriedly scoped her into your arms, "Nee-chan!! This nii-san step on John! He no sowwy!! ". Your sister spoke angrily as you could feel cold sweat running down your neck, "i-is that so? U-um..". You looked up at him that stared at you both coldly, ah how you want to cry, "U-um Ruri-chan.. I-i think he didn't mean to do that.. H-how about we head home for today?". "NO! HE NO SOWWY YET!! RURI STILL WAN PLAY TOO!!!", she screams, throwing a tantrum. Ah how you could feel your head throbbing and wishing you could just vanished into thin air. "You...", you could hear his voice as you shivered and gulped before looking back at him. "Sorry. Didn't see it there..", you blinked a few times, dumbfounded when heard he apologies to your sister. That seems also surprised your little sister too. While both of you were dumbfounded with what just happened, he just took his leave.

"R-ruri.. Please never do that again, okay?", you looked back at your sister. "Why?", she tilted her head innocently. You sighed as you weakly smiled at her, "Um.. How do I say this.. Not everyone is as nice as him..". Your sister frowned in disagreement, "But it's not Ruri fault! Dat nii-san is wrong and no say sowwy befow. Censei said when wrong need say sowwyy!". "A-ah yes I know.. It just..", you saw the determined looks on your sister face as you just sighed and gave her a weak smile, "..but never shout to people, okay? That is not nice things to do.. Especially to someone older than you.. I could hear your voice even when I was that far away.. You should have asked him nicely..". You saw her sulked a little, "..Sowwy, nee-chan..". Pecked her chubby cheek, you let her down and took hold of her hand, "Good. Let's play at home for today.. It's getting late too". After what just happened, you feel you have no energy anymore to play around in that park and since it's autumn, the day seems ended faster. 'That face...Where have I seen before...he looks...familiar...'.

-Ruri's & Mikey's POV-

Sunny day meaning she would be allowed to play at the park nearby the house. It's really only five minutes walk but for her and her short feet, it will take 15 minutes for her and with all the distractions on the way like petting stray cats or trying to catch a frog, it ended up taking her half an hour to finally reach the park. Playing by herself, her eyes then saw the familiar figure 'Oo!! Nii-san yesterday!!'. She was about to run to him but then stopped herself, trying to remembering what her sister had said.

Clearly her older sister has stated not to talk to strangers or approach someone like him anymore. Did she remember? Nope. She only remembers the stranger parts and since he talked to her before, meaning that he is not a stranger anymore, right? Convincing herself, she trotted her way to him. Staring at him, she wondered why he would lay there on the bench at this cold weather. Coming closer, she tapped his cheek, "Wakey, nii-san. No sleep hewe.. Nee-chan said is no gud.. Will catch cowld". She heard a faint groan as she then felt him grab her little hand, stopping her from tapping his cold cheek. Seeing his eyes flutter open, he looked at her in annoyance, "Scram". He let go of her hand as he back closed his eyes, yet there she is still standing watching him full of curiosity, "What you doin?". "Sleeping.. Leave, kid", he grumbled as he seemed to be trying to go back to sleep. He could hear the small running footsteps furthering away yet it seems she is back again.

Wondering what she was doing, he opened his eyes. She apparently has covered his stomach with a pile of dried leaves, "What the...". "It's cowld..", she looked at him still holding a few pieces of dried leaves in her tiny hands. "You-", about to say his piece of mind, his stomach growling. Hearing that, she reached inside her tiny pocket and pulled out the half eaten cookie, "Want sum?". He fall silent before grab the cookie from her, "Thanks..". Start munching it, he thought the taste would be bad but to his surprise it taste really good, "not bad..". "Nee-chan makes the best kukie!!", she chirped at him proudly, "We got lots lots lots at home!! Wanna come?".

Mikey looked at her, studying the child in front of him, "Aren't your parents ever tell you not to talk to strangers?". She tilted her head to the side, "But nii-san isn't? We talk um yesterday? And nii-san say sowy so we fwiend?". He falls silent again, and seems thinking about her logic. Seemingly sharing the same brain cells, "Is that so.. Make sense to me". It doesn't make any senses but her face brightened up in happiness for obtaining a new friend, that big innocent smile, it sort of remind him of someone yet he seems unable to remember it. Feeling the warm little hand took hold of his finger, he could see her bright smile, "Ruri will show the way!". Letting her lead the way to her place, little did she know she would probably give her sister a heart attack.
