"Was that a gun shout?" I would laugh at Morgan's idiotic question if I wasn't so worried about Alannah. She ran off after the unsub on her own, we managed to secure the cabin soon after she ran off but she was with the most dangerous of the unsubs. Officers were arresting the shooters while Hotch, Morgan and I went after Alannah.
The gunshot stopped my heart, I knew deep down in my stomach that something was wrong. "Alannah!" I call out before taking off in the direction the gun shot came from. We burst through the foliage to see Theo Brooks holding Josephine McAdams while his gun was pointed forward. I follow the direction of his gun to see Alannah lying lifeless on the floor, blood oozing from her stomach; her vest lying inches from her body, why did she take it off? "Alannah." I call out but there's no reply.
"Drop the gun." Hotch shouts, his voice demanding control.
"I'm not going back to jail." Before we have a chance to convince Theo otherwise, his gun is pointed at his head. Another loud gunshot rings out around the woods as Theo falls to the floor.
Morgan runs forward to grab a terrified Josephine away from Theo's body. "Take her back to the cabin and get paramedics here now!"
Hotch orders as Morgan runs off. I fall to Alannah's side and try to put pressure on her wound, her deep red, warm blood covers my pale skin and the sleeves of my lilac shirt. "Alannah, Alannah can you hear me?" I cry out, failing to hold back the tears that were beginning to sting my eyes. "Please Alannah wake up." I plead with her as Hotch holds his fingers to her neck.
"There's a pulse, but it's weak, Morgan is getting help, they'll be here soon."
"She doesn't have time." I cry at Hotch as I try to stop the blood flow of the woman I love while the life drains from her body.
"Reid everything is going to be ok. The paramedics will be here and they will help her."
"But what about the baby?"
The words leave my mouth before I can stop them. Hotch is in shock but I'm too worried to care what he thinks. "Baby?" Hotch's voice is in a state of shock, I've never heard his voice like this before.
"She's pregnant, about two weeks."
"Why didn't she tell me?" Before I can answer Hotch's question Morgan reappears with the paramedics.
"Sir, we need some space." I hear the paramedics words but I can't stand to leave her alone with strangers. "Sir please."
"Reid, you have to let the paramedics do their work." Morgan's hand is placed on my shoulder as he kneels down beside me. "Come on kid let the experts do their job." Morgan's voice is soft and calm as he tries to convince me to let her go. I place a gentle kiss on her forehead before letting go of the wound so that the paramedics can do their job.
"This can't be happening again. It just can't be." I watch the paramedics cut her top to get at the wound. Her stomach is surprisingly free of bruises but there are still a number of scars on her pale skin. Some are older than others, I'm guessing some go back to Brendan's abuse to her as well as George and Alan's abuse.
"Come on kid, she's in good hands." Morgan tries to reassure me, but all I see is her pale lifeless body with blood pouring from the entrance and exit wounds caused by the bullet. Morgan pulls me into a hug as Alannah is put onto a stretcher.
"Can I come with her?" I ask as the paramedics begin to carry her back to ambulance.
"Of course but we have to go now." One of the paramedic's orders. We don't wait about to be told again. We run back through the forest to the cabin while the last of the shooters get taken into custody.
"We'll call the team and tell them what happened. See what happened at their end." Hotch says but I'm too busy getting into the ambulance with Alannah to care what he was saying. "Reid," His commanding tone catches my attention. "We have to tell Alan."
I don't know how I'm meant to feel about the comment. I know it's true, he needs to know but I didn't want him anywhere near Alannah. "You can tell him if you want. I'm going to stay with her." I say as the door of the ambulance closes. The ambulance is soon on it's way to the hospital, she's finally getting the help she needed. "Is the hospital far?"
"About 20 minutes if we don't hit traffic." The paramedic seeing to Alannah answers.
"How is she?"
"I've managed to clip the bleed but she needs to get into surgery to repair the wound and fast or she will bleed out."
"Is there any way the baby could have survived?" Ever since I heard the gunshot I don't care that she didn't tell me, all I want is for Alannah to be ok.
"Baby? She's pregnant?"
"About two weeks"
The paramedic looks at the wound, letting out a sigh as he examines the position. "There's a slim chance, but from the position of the wound I doubt that a baby that small could have survived. I'm so sorry."
Tears I didn't know I had left in me begin to fall from my eyes. I was so mad at her for not telling me and now that it has been snatched from me all I want is for us to be a family more than anything. Why did I have to be so mean to her? I wouldn't even let her touch me, now I don't know if I'll ever be able to feel her touch again and that knowledge is killing me more than anything else.
"Spen..." Alannah's slurred version of my name makes me jump forward. I take her hand in my blood soaked hand as I stroke her hair, with my other hand, leaving traces of blood on her forehead.
"Alannah, can you hear me?" A weak smile grows on her lips at the sound of my voice, "Hey there's my beautiful girl."
"I'm... I'm sorry."
"Hey don't you dare, you have nothing to be sorry for. We're gonna get you help and everything is going to be ok, I promise."
"Spence."
"Shhh, don't talk, save your strength."
"I love you." Tears seep from Alannah's eyes, she knows her injury is bad.
"I love you too Alannah, but you need to conserve your energy." Alannah reaches a hand up so that it brushes against my cheek, it's as if she's drunk with a sloopy smile on her face as she looks at me. I can't help but let a tear escape my eye at her touch. I close my eyes and enjoy the moment as her skin is pressed against mine. I could stay in this moment forever but it's snatched away from me as her hand falls from my face; the noise of the heart monitor goes from a steady beep to one continuous note.
"Her heart has stopped, excuse me sir." The paramedic says as he pushes me aside.
"Alannah please don't do this to me." I cry as the paramedic starts pumping at her chest. I watch helplessly from the side at the life drains from Alannah, all I can do is pray that she comes back to me.
