I watch helplessly through tear filled eyes as the paramedic pumps at Alannah's chest. "Please don't do this, come back to me Alannah please, I don't know what I will do without you. I can't lose you as well." I mutter under my breath as the paramedic continues to work at her. All I can hear is the long continuous tone of the heart monitor, I don't normally pray, but right now I don't know what else to do as I wais for the heart monitor to turn to short beeps but it hasn't so far.
"What's our ETA?" The paramedic working on Alannah calls out to the paramedic driving the ambulance.
"About ten minutes." He calls back.
"I don't know if she's going to last that long. If I don't get a pulse I'll have to call it."
"No you can't give up." I shout at the paramedic in a panicked rage. "You can't just let her die."
"I'm doing everything I can sir, she's losing too much blood and we can't stop it here." I hear his words but I can't believe them.
"Alannah, I don't know if you can hear me but please, I need you to fight. I promise you, I will give you everything you deserve." The tone is still piercing through my ears, I know the longer it takes to get her back the worse chance she has of surviving. "Come on now Alannah, we can't put Alan away without your help. The team has found more evidence against him, we can get him Alannah. We can finally have that live together, me and you, please Alannah don't leave me." It's as if she actually heard my words, the long note turns to short beeps. "Oh thank God." I let out a sigh of relief at the change of sound.
"She's back, step on it." The ambulance gains speed before slowing down to a stop as we reach the hospital.
The doors open and a buzz of activity is happening as doctors ask for information. The paramedics take Alannah from the ambulance and begin to wheel her into the hospital. I run to keep up with the doctors, her ice cold hand in mine as the doctors sprout different medical terms. Normally I would try to listen in and hear every word they say but I'm only able to register a few terms, "Gunshot wound to the abdomen." "Bullet went straight through." "Roughly two weeks pregnant." "Had to be resuscitated in the ambulance."
It's all a blur, I don't know if one person is speaking or if the voices are from different people. My attention is on Alannah as they wheel her down the corridor, through doors while they hook her up to different things and check the wound. They push her through another set of doors. I run after them but a hand on my chest stops me from going any further, I reach for her as her hand slips out of mine. "Sir, I'm sorry but you can't go through there." Comes a sweet sounding voice from somewhere beside me but all I can see is Alannah being wheeled away from me.
"Please I need to be with her."
"I'm sorry sir, it's against hospital policies."
"I just need to see her." I run past the nurse to try and catch up with Alannah.
"Sir you can't go down there."
The nurse tries to chase after me but I'm blind sighted. I need to find Alannah, I can't stand here knowing she could be taking her last breath and I'm not with her, she can't die surrounded by strangers. "Alannah!" I call out, although I know she couldn't answer, I just need to see her, I can't survive losing someone else that I love.
"Sir please you can't be in here." I continue ignoring the nurse as she tries to plead with me to leave. I look through the windows in the different sets of doors to see if I can see her but there's no sign of her.
"We'll handle this." I hear a familiar voice, but it's not Alannah's so I ignore it.
"He can't be down here, none of you can." the nurses voice says.
