She chose a difficult route for their detour. It involved going into the mountains. The last part they were crawling through brush that got caught in their fur, jumped from rock to rock, really challenging their tired bodies. However, Seonghwa finally saw Ellinor relax. They were exhausted, but the last minutes she still ran. A small cottage appeared, better than a shed, but not much. She ran around it a few times, making sure there were no new smells. Then she stopped by the door and shifted. She opened the door and went inside. Seonghwa followed. By the time he had gotten into the dark cottage, she already had some clothes on. Seonghwa shifted and grabbed whatever clothes she gave him. She had her head in a big casket, mumbling.
«There,» she said, giving him some sweatpants. «It'll be too short, but... Socks! Here. What about this one?» She held up a shirt in front of him and then shook her head. «Way too small. Didn't I...»
After having searched around the casket she found a t-shirt and a flannel that weren't too bad in size.
«Will you light the fire?» she asked as she started to go through the shelves that held her dry goods.
«Ehm,» he said. He wasn't really used to starting fires, he barely knew how to toss wood into the stove back home. Ellinor chuckled.
«Use the smaller wood-thingys first, and then put the larger ones on top after. Matches are over there.»
«I can do that,» he said, adding a silent «maybe».
But there was a fire, and soon smoke rose to the whole in the roof, as it was supposed to. Ellinor put a cauldron over the fire, and then she ran out with her bucket to get water. She didn't have much to work with, but nothing had ever smelled better than the noodles she quickly cooked up. Some sort of meat balls floated around in the soup, and it was magnificent. When the sat with a bowl of hot soup each, blowing on the hot content, he smiled at her.
«I would just like to remind you that I promised a hot meal. I made no promises as to what it would taste like.»
«Yeah yeah, whatever,» he chuckled and tasted. Of course it tasted like heaven. Anything would at this point.
As they sat on the bench, leaning on the wall, he looked out the window.
«How do you make sure you're safe here?»
«I have several circles of traps.»
«Traps?»
«Yeah, all sorts of traps. Things that will noise, a lot or a little. Some traps that will hurt anyone coming through. Scary traps. I'll show you tomorrow.»
«Okay.»
«We're safe here. I feel absolutely nothing different, except for you being here.»
«Do yu think we both could sleep?»
«I think so, but... maybe we should keep watch until we're completely sure?»
«Yeah, maybe that's best?»
«I'll take first watch ,» she nodded. «I'll run a few rounds checking all the safety measurements. You can sleep. I promise it's safe.»
«I trust you.»
«I hope the bed will do,» she said, looking towards the corner. The straw mattress was covered by several big skin rugs. A few blankets were folded at the end of the bed, and there pillows.
«It's more than good enough, Ell,» he smiled warmly. «Right now that looks heavenly. Are you sure you don't want me to take the first watch?»
«I'm sure. It's a good idea for me to check everything. You sleep, and then I'll wake you when it's my turn. There's tepid water if you would like to wash up.»
