After a wonderful breakfast together with the entire pack, Mila and Kai were put in charge of looking after the other children while the adults discussed important issues. The youngest babies stayed with the adults. Ellinor got to hold Minah, and she didn't want to let go of her.
«She is gorgeous,» she whispered to Helena, over and over again.
It was a serious meeting. Hongjoong looked at the pack, seemingly relaxing around the fireplace, but they all had a feeling. Something was about to change.
«I'm so happy to see the pack back together again,» he said, looking at each and every one of them. «A lot has happened lately, I'm not sure we need to recap everything, but... we're all back together again, that's what matters. Still, there are a few things the pack needs to address.»
They looked at each other. Some of them straightened their back. Others grabbed the hand of the one they loved.
«For one, we're now in the fortress. Should we stay? That's a big decision we need to make together. And then there are all these children that Livv and Sunwoo stumbled upon. Are we going to welcome them into the pack? Yes, Sun, I think I know the answer, but I would like for this to be a joint decision.» He smiled at Livv and Sunwoo who were ready to fight for the children immediately. «And I'm sure there's a lot of other things we need to think about too, but a big thing happened yesterday, and I'm not sure if everyone knows exactly what happened when we rescued Ellinor yesterday.»
A lot of them looked genuinely surprised, but Seonghwa clenched his jaws together. Ellinor looked at him with a furrowed brow.
«I was the one to kill the leader alpha of Belari,» Seonghwa said. «Ellinor's father.»
«It was the right thing to do,» Ellinor said and grabbed his hand.
He nodded. They all felt it. «What I didn't really consider in the moment... My instincts lead me to... You might know that I grew up as the heir of Amanda. I was to be their leader when my father died. But I left the clan as Ellinor left hers. But of course, I learned a lot before I left, and... I got quite a few birth gifts as well. I didn't lose them when I left the clan.»
«What Seonghwa is having trouble saying is that is strong. Very strong. The strongest alpha we have ever seen. If he wants to.» Hongjoong looked at him.
«If I want to,» Seonghwa scoffed. He looked like he was about to cry. «I'm not saying I did what I wanted to do last night. It was more my instincts that made it happen. But I do have to take responsibility for my actions.»
«Just say it, love,» Ellinor said.
«I killed the leader of Belari ritually. I am, according to the ancient traditions, the new alpha of Belari now.»
The silence was deafening. It took them some time to absorb what he had just said, and they sat there for a while, just thinking.
«But, what does that mean?» San finally asked.
«I don't know yet. I'm hoping they don't want to recognize my leadership, and that'll be it.»
«You're the leader of Belari whether they want it or not. Whether you want it or not,» Hongjoong said. «If they won't accept it, the pack is disbanded.»
«They're going to try to kill you,» Ellinor said with tears in her eyes. The seriousness of the situation was dawning on her.
«Someone probably thought they were next in line,» Hongjoong said. «But of course, we're going to protect Seonghwa.»
«But why don't you just do it? Take the job?» Mingi looked at Seonghwa.
They all looked around the room. This wasn't something they had even thought about before. For most of them, the clans were distant, too obscure for those who had never been part of them. For Seonghwa and Ellinor it was just scary. They didn't want this, but when did life ever turn out as you wanted?
