The bird, I discovered, was delicious. Nathan was a by far a better cook than I , not that I would tell him that. After dinner we went to bed, Nathan giving me kisses every chance he got.
I currently sat watching as Nathan removed weeds form the garden the sun making his tan skin glisten nicely. The rain had left the ground just moist enough so that pulling weeds was easy. Over the days I had come to appreciate Nathaniel's vastly different physique.
He was reaching to pull a particularly stubborn weed when his eyes locked with the fenced plants along the wall of the cabin. It was the section of my garden that held aconite and other equally useful defensive herbs.
"Just one petal from that could kill me" Nathan said looking at the lethal plants intensely. I assumed he was addressing one plant in particular . The specimen in question was a rear form of Aconite, a treasure of the covent.
"It's been grown here since before I came to the cabin." I said going to stand next to him.
He made a sound of acknowledgment " It doesn't even give off a noticeable scent, I can't smell it even at this distance. My father would be disappointed if he knew it took me so long to notice it. If you meet any strange wolves feel free to pluck petals at will." He said glaring at the plant.
" I already met a strange wolf"
He finally looked away from the plant his face breaking out into a smile. " That's not a nice thing to say to your mate Azula." He said taking a single step towards me.
His movement was far too obvious, I took a step back trying to maintain a safe distance. Another thing I realized over the days with him, he was very adapt in maintaining stealth if he wanted to.
As I waited to see his next move he lounged at me, making me fall to the ground him on top of me. He pinned my arms on the grassy ground looking down at me.
" Apologize like a good girl" he said amusement glimmering in his orbs.
" I refuse, I told no lie" I replied forgoing the idea of trying to free my arms. I awaited my punishment.
Nathan slowly brought his mouth to the side of my neck his lips hovering against my skin, " You hurt my feelings, my wolf takes offense, we're not strange." I could feel his lips brush against my skin as he spoke.
He was strange to me, always happy, always smiling, making me feel all messed up inside. He was the strangest person I'd ever met. But then again my references were limited.
The animal bit me , I made an odd sound pushing him away. He went rigid his mouth hovering over my skin. I held his shoulders breathing erratically.
Whatever that was I liked it.
He grazed his teeth where my neck and shoulder met and I had to stop myself from making the sound again. His hand fell just under my chest, his fingers grazing the peaks slightly.
"You smell so good" he mumbled running is tongue along my skin. He pressed himself against me something warm protruding onto my lower stomach. I looked down past his naked chest to see nothing but the dark cloth tied around his waste.
" This is going to be harder than I thought" he said standing and extending his hand to me. I took it and reached to kiss him but he a avoided my touch. He briefly glanced up the mountain before returning to pull weeds.
What just happened?
...........
Later that night we laid in bed a blanket covering the both of us. Nathan took in lung fulls of my scent as both of us squished together to fit on the small frame.
I found that I had assumed wrong, we could indeed fit in the small bed. We just had to be very close.
"I'm fighting my instinct to mark you" he said suddenly. I turned as best as I could to face him.
'Mark me'
Yet another term I would have to add to my vocabulary list.
" Wolves bond over time and being here with you, knowing I'm going to have to leave is driving my wolf crazy." He added nose still buried in my neck.
"Your words suggest your wolf and you are separate." I said trying to cover my ignorance.
He laughed, the vibrations soothing me as they shook the bed. "It's not that we're separate, we are one in the same. But certain thoughts I have, my instincts, certain yearnings. They're not human in nature, animalistic and wild they come from the wolf within." His sounded so confident in his description.
" Apart of being a wolf is to become one with the beast, not let it control you or having to suppress it. A balance."He ran his finger through a strand of my hair. "So no, my wolf isn't a separate person. It's the part of me I know isn't human."
I watched as the pendant on my necklace moved up and down on my chest contemplating his words. He seemed so at one with himself, certain of who he was. The only thing I was so certain of was herds and there uses, not much else.
" You're confident in your identity." I said not looking at him, he made a sound of acknowledge in reply.
I fiddled the gem before embracing him fully. I would have to let him go soon, but not today. I would have him tonight.
I kissed him trying to climb on top of him. Nathan chuckled brushing my hair to one side. I noticed he was trying to limit our close interacts.
"It doesn't make sense to deny what you are. I came to accept my nature early on." he said trying to divert my attention. It wouldn't work.
I succeeded in getting on top of him throwing the fabric to our feet. He gripped the curve of my waist his hold verging on painful. He always held me so tightly. He looked up at me, my hands on either side of his head.
I leaned down to kiss him, he again cut our meeting short, and pulled me against his chest. He pulled the blanket back over us and kissed my forehead soon after. I felt his arms engulf me stopping me from moving freely.
"Goodnight my mate." he said in a soft voice. I had the feeling he knew exactly what he had done. But I would let him win this battle.
I relaxed against him letting the warmth of his body lull me to sleep.
