His father had been keeping a closer eye on him, he knew it. His usually barely livable regime had becoming grueling and unforgiving. It was a punishment for his absence and silence, he just knew it.
Alexander sat in the tree next to him as he tried to ease his sore muscles.
"He's trying to kill me I'm sure of it." Nathaniel said leaning against the hard trunk.
Alexander chuckled staring out into the rapidly darkening wilderness. "Maybe."
"He's been watching me every minute of the day. When he's not doing that he's beating the shit out a me, I can't leave with how over worked I am under his constant watch. I won't make it far enough before I'm caught." Nathaniel vented jumping across to Alexander's tree.
"He's giving you pay back for all those days of training you missed." He said turning to his friend.
"Time to change over!" A voice yelled from below.
Looking down the two men gazed at Alexander's younger brother. The likeness between the two was apparent, they both shared the blonde hair and green eyes of their father and the small frame of their mother.
" A guy turns fifteen and thinks he can talk to his superiors like equals!" Alexander said jumping from the tree, holding his brother in a chokehold.
His brother pushed him away, " stop it."
Nathaniel chuckled through his pain at the two brothers. Ruffling the boy's hair, his gazed staring up at the higher ranked wolf in admiration.
"You're growing into a strong wolf." He complimented. " You might just surpass your brother."
" He wishes! Lest go." Alexander scoffed walking in the direction of his house.
Alexander's home wasn't far from where they had been patrolling. Intruders were rear but not unheard of so it was necessary on a territory as big as their pack's to keep watch.
" My father will be busy this weekend, something about a meeting in with Crosskey. He'll be gone so I'll slip away while we're making our rounds." Nathan said removing a large ham from the refrigerator.
"Yeah my mom's gonna go with him." Alexander mumbled tearing through the meat.
"Yeah-" Nathan was interrupted as he doubled over in sudden pain, Alexander appearing next to him quickly.
" Dude what's wrong!" He asked frantic at his friends sudden collapse.
Words couldn't escape him, it was like someone hand dove something through his heart, the pain stopping his breath. His wolf cried out in agony. It was Azula, she was in distress. He just knew something bad was happening to her. His jumble of thoughts came out in a mess of groans.
The pain lessened to a bearable amount allowing him to gasp out an explanation as he stumbled to his feet. "Azula, she needs me." He clutched at his heart the searing feeling radiating through him despite no injuries.
That's all the warning Alexander got before Nathan was shifting, disappearing out the door up the mountain in her direction.
The trees blurred together as his wolf navigated the dense forest. An hours long trip reduced to a matter of minutes as he let his emotion lead him.
What could have possibly caused his mate to be in this much pain?
He quickly jumped across the river, Azula's cabin coming into view. He shifted back to his human form calling out to her, instantly knowing she wasn't there. Her scent was fresh, she couldn't have been gone long.
He turned his nose to the air scenting it, there was another scent mingling with hers, a woman, pungent with magic. He would follow her scent.
He retook his wolf form following their combined smell as it lead him further down the mountain. He shifted as he came upon a large house, other scents adding to Azula's.
More witches.
Again he knew quickly that she wasn't in the house, he growled in frustration. The pain within him only dulled but not completely gone. He caught her scent on the wind, he knew where she was. He cut through the wilderness with ease going to her.
He ran to her, desperate to see her. He found her bathed in red in a clearing the moonlight capturing her beauty. He called out to her, bringing her gaze to him.
His erratic mind ignoring the chaos around them, unconcerned with his surroundings he embraced her.
Deep breaths, she's ok.
Hugging her tight against himself he felt as she broke down, soaking his chest with tears.
Glancing around himself he realized the state of his mate and the area around her. She was bathed in blood, the red liquid's metallic scent overwhelming his senses. The dead bodies scattered around them, the scent of fear and magic equally pungent in the heavy night air.
He took a moment to try and piece the puzzle together. What could have possibly happened in his absence. Azula had done this?
He looked down at her his gaze wavering with questions. He decided he didn't care if she had done this, he was her mate he would stand by her no matter her actions. He didn't care what reason she had, she was alive they were dead, that's all that mattered.
She came out alive.
She didn't offer an explanation instead she tightened her hold on him all her feelings pouring into him through their embrace. The bond the had form strengthening her feelings flowing into him.
He took more lungfuls of her scent secretly chastising himself for allowing her to get hurt.
He had failed to protect her.
