The rapidly fading light of the setting sun casted distorted shadows all around. Nathan climbed down from the tree with the rest of the deer he had placed to 'dry out' earlier in the day.
"The bears might get it if I leave it here" he said grounding himself with barely a sound.
There were bears on the mountain but they never bothered me. Would the meat draw them to my house?
" That won't draw them to the cabin right?" I said voicing my concern. I couldn't over power a bear,it would kill me.
He chuckled hauling the half a deer carcass over his shoulder, this time there was no blood. " Not with my scent close by" he said as he walked next to me.
I took his word for it.I took in the multicolored sky as I walked, by the time we made it back to the cabin the final streaks of skylight had disappeared.
Nathan slammed the deer on my kitchen table the old wooden structure creaking under the weight. He broke a piece off the dead animal and began chewing.
I scrunched up my face at him as he made short work of the meat. He was a wolf, him eating like one shouldn't have surprised me. I touched my necklace and watched as a detached leg became bear bone. Nathan looked over at me wiping his face.
"What? A guy's gotta eat" he said coming towards me.
"Did you even chew?" I said as he invaded my personal space.
"Yeah I did." He said as he scented my hair. I waited for a moment to see if he would touch me, he didn't. I yawned as a encircled my arms around him, I wanted to feel his skin on mine.
I could never manage to stay awake long after sun down, it was like once it became nighttime all my energy faded with the setting of the sun.
"Come to bed with me." I said pulling the wolf with me.
"At least have dinner first." He said laughing to himself.
I couldn't do much once I got like this," I'm not hungry." I said as we entered the small room. I had given Nathan one of my bed sheets as he had let my other blanket get washed away.
I took a minute to contemplate my next move, it was spring so the nights were still a bit cold. I looked over at Nathan and saw he was looking over at me.
I could use the heat producing wolf as a bed warmer.
I ignored the voice in the back of my head that said he would be wrapped around us all night. I pulled the sheet off the small mattress and let it fall to the ground on top of Nathan's sleeping area.
"The bed can't fit both of us." I said lifting the dress over my head. Nathan didn't answer so I looked over at him where he stood weirdly rocking in place. He usually stood tall and confident so seeing him fidget was unnatural.
I looked up at him in question.
"You're very attractive." He said still rocking from foot to foot.
His answer made me pause as I threw the clothes with the rest of my dirty laundry. He thought I was attractive? He walked around me to the pile of sheets.
He exhaled and pulled me to the ground on top of him, my body falling awkwardly on his chest. I stared down at him awaiting his explanation for man handling me.
" Of course you're hot, you were made to be mine" he said more to himself than me. His hands held me in place on either side of my waist. " Mine" he said smushing me to his chest. "Mate"
My necklace pressed into my skin painfully between us, I whimpered quickly trying to push myself away. I rolled off him to the floor, the ground not as uncomfortable as I expected. I inspected my chest and was glad to see there was no mark just slight redness.
"Why are you always wearing that necklace, you even wore it in the river." Nathan said rubbing his chest as a quickly fading mark was left where my necklace was against his skin.
"Covent leader gave it to me as a child, it has an enchantment on it so I can't take it off." I said inspecting the red and black pendant hanging from a thin gold chain. Nathan took the necklace trying to pry it off me but I stopped him.
" I've never seen a gem like it." He mumbled inspecting it.
I yawned again suddenly feeling the renewed weight of tiredness making my eyes heavy. I gently pushed his hand away borrowing into his side.
"I'm not sure what kind of stone it is either." I said scooting as close to him as I could.
He wrapped his arm around me resting his head in my hair. " That thing stung, I've never heard of a stone that could harm werewolves." I could feel his jaw move as he spoke.
I humphed in reply. I hadn't either but I didn't know much about werewolves. Nathan sighed and turned on his side pulling me to him by the waist in the process.
Sleep over came me in his arms. All his questions about my necklace would have to wait.
