Y/N's POV:
The whole night Hades pestered the three fates asking why they killed him.
Turns out it was an accident. Clotho passed the Angel's string to Atropos because she wanted to see it, then somehow it got caught on her scissors. Then when she cut Theseus's string it cut the string of the angel too!
Don't ask me how they managed to screw that up.
Now Hades is all over the grumbling about how he wanted to end the angel. He's also moaning about not having a rival and what's the point of trying to rule the world anymore.
I feel a bit sorry for the angel. I mean they weren't supposed to die. It was just a stupid accident!
My shift is now starting and I am at the river once more rowing my gondola to receive the spirits. I expect I'll see the angel there, I've never seen the spirit of an angel.
As usual by the docks there is a whole line of spirits, there must be at least seventy! There must be a war today. War is easy for everyone, it's easy to kill people. It's easy to succumb to the bad. It's hard though to be a light in a dark cave, it's hard to be good when all else is dark.
It's also not easy to row a gondola all day!
'I hate this job.' I think as three spirits pile into my gondola.
"So, what's your story?" I ask them. The three look at each other in surprise, probably since I spoke. Humans have ruined my reputation!
According to them I'm a man, who's evil.
Firstly I am a girl as you can see. Secondly I'm not evil! Sure I work for the evil side, but I don't have a choice! I was made to do this, I can't change the future! It doesn't occur to anyone that I might not want to work here!
It's a kind of way of survival. Work foe Hades and be his servant and he gives you life. Don't work for him and if you don't well...
"We were killed in the war." Explains one of the spirits. I nod and still rowing hold my hand out for the coins. The humans just started giving them to me, even though I can just take them for free. They think if I don't I'll just leave them there.
But there's another thing they're wrong about: I'm not human.
The rest of the day which for me is twenty one hours I row, receive stories and get coins.
Just like any other day. I'm so sick of this! I wish I had someone to confide in, sure the three fates are my friends. But they don't understand.
They love the underworld! The love their job!
I wouldn't want to take that away from them with all my sorrows.
I turn my thoughts towards what I'll do on my break. I usually start off reading for about an hour, Then I go to the three fates and have something to eat and after that sleep for an hour. If I don't go to the three fates I busy myself in my house instead.
Like watercoloring, counting my money and stealing food from Persephone's kitchen. She thinks Hades does it- She isn't wrong. I've seen Hades do it too.
Don't worry, I eat during my shifts as well! But yes, I only get an hour of sleep. It's not like I need more, apparently I have tireless energy so I can keep rowing the gondola. The furthest I have been away from the underworld was the Elysian Fields. Which is still basically the underworld.
I think that was ten years ago. I begged Hades for a day of vacation, after years of nagging he finally agreed. The Elysian Fields were the definition of paradise!
The grass was the lushest green I had seen in my life! The sky was a baby blue and the flowers of the meadow left a sweet, flowery scent in the air. The breeze was warm, even warmer than the over world! I wish I could go there again.
Instead here I am listening to each spirits's story:
"I got killed by wolves!"
"Someone stabbed me!"
"My wife threw a slipper at me!"
"Someone pushed me off a cliff!"
"I wa sick!"
"My house collapsed!"
"I died at sea!"
"I was in the war!"
I listen to each story sympathetically. I show my interest in all the spirits, but they never ask about me.
Finally I go back one last time to the docks for my last lap.
My gondola hits the docks and instead of a spirit, I see an angel.
Why isn't he a spirit? Maybe angels stay that way?
I motion for him to get on my gondola he obliges and then sits down. "I'm Pit! Servant to Lady Palutena the goddess of light!" he chirps. So this is the famous Pitty-Pat that Hades always talks about.
"Where am I?"
"The river styx, angel."
"Wait.... AM I DEAD?!"
"It sure seems that way."
"That means you're the ferryman!"
"Do I look like a man?"
"Sorry! It's just that in the stories you are."
"...."
"I can't be here! I have a job!"
"How are you gonna do it then?"
"I need to go back to life!"
"How?"
"The rewind spring!"
"A dead person can't come back to life."
"PLEASE! YOU HAVE TO HELP ME!"
"Why?"
"THE WORLD WILL BE DESTROYED IF YOU DON'T!"
Man, this guy was desperate! His problem, not mine. I just silently keep rowing feeling a bit sorry for him. He'd probably go to the Elysian Fields like all angels did.
"Where are you taking me?"
"The underworld."
The angel gets up suddenly shaking my gondola. "NO! I will not go, the underworld is for dead people!" he exclaims. "You are dead." I point out a bit amused. He shakes his head "There must be a way!" he insists.
"There isn't."
"Who are you?"
"My name is Y/N, I'm the ferry deity."
"I mean, what's your story."
My breath hitches. For the first time in years someone has asked about me. I feel embarrassed to admit it but my eyes became watery. I feel a bit of hope that someone cares about my story, that someone cares to ask!
He's a servant too. I can't imagine how I would feel if I failed Hades. He anyways didn't want Pitty-pat to die. So if I helped him, I'd be doing Hades a favour.
I will help him.
