"Jeon Jungkook! You didn't tell me you'd be bringing home your girlfriend!" Soyeon exclaims, enveloping her brother tightly in her arms.
"Girlfriend?" Jungkook makes a face, pulling away from the hug. "Noona, I can barely tolerate her as a friend."
Ayla glares at Jungkook, her brows furrowing in annoyance. "You watch your mouth, mushroom head."
"See? Do you see the disrespect?" Jungkook points at Ayla while staring at his sister, similar to a child tattling on their sibling to their parents.
"You deserve it," Soyeon retorts, pushing Jungkook aside to face Ayla with a friendly smile. "I'm Jeon Soyeon, Jungkook's unfortunate older sister."
"'Unfortunate'? You're lucky to be my sister!" Jungkook exclaims, but he gets ignored.
"Nice to meet you, Soyeon-ssi. I'm Moon Ayla, Jungkook's only friend in university." She bows respectfully at the older woman, before offering her a similar smile.
"'Only'? You're nobody special!" Jungkook exclaims once again, but gets ignored for a second time.
"He told me he was going to Korea visit his family for the holidays so I thought I may as well go with him to visit my grandparents. They've been wanting to see me for a while, too," Ayla explains, as she gets guided by Soyeon to an empty table.
"Is he being good in America?" Soyeon asks curiously. "He never updates me anymore. No texts, no calls, nothing."
"Don't be dramatic, Noona."
"And don't be a troublemaker, Kookie," Soyeon counters, pulling out the seat beside hers for Jungkook to sit on.
Ayla laughs. "Don't worry, Soyeon-ssi, I'm making sure to keep him in line."
"Please don't be so formal. Call me Unnie," Soyeon tells her, causing Ayla to nod in response. "Go right up to the counter and order any drink and snack that you want. It's on the house."
"Oh, no, I don't mind paying for—"
"Oh, don't even think about that. Think of this as my small payment for keeping my brother company and taking care of him."
"It's really no—"
"Just accept it, Ayla, because she will keep on insisting," Jungkook butts in, knowing how stubborn his sister can be.
Ayla finally relents and Soyeon smiles brightly, before turning her head towards the counter. "Taehyung should be up there. He's probably squatting down on the floor and hiding as he snacks on one of Jimin's new batch of fresh pastries."
Ayla makes her way to the counter as Soyeon loudly calls for Taehyung, leaving Jungkook to catch up with his sister.
When she gets to the counter, a mop of silver hair is peeking out from behind the display case. She clears her throat to catch the person's attention and when she does, they startle and drop a metal tray they must've been holding as it drops to the floor in a loud clang.
"It's fine, I'm fine!" The person, a male voice, declares from behind the counter as to not garner unnecessary concern.
Ayla, feeling guilty for being responsible for the accident, walks around the counter to help him pick up whatever he may have dropped. When she sees him gathering a few soiled cookies from the floor, she immediately drops down to her knees and helps him clean up the mess.
"Oh, thank you, I—" The man finally looks up and meets Ayla's apologetic eyes.
And when their gazes meet, it's as if everything stops— the world, the time, their hearts. It shouldn't but it does.
