33. penalty with interest
Meri chipkali
Aarohi had the two words, his soft warm breath with his cold touch, running in her mind throughout the night. This was the first night after ages where she did not sleep because of her mind constantly hammering her thoughts, but for the first time, this was owing to a guy and his charming words.
She was never the one for titles and tags, but the fact that Neil called her his, the meri before the nickname (which she despised a lot), was tugging at her heartstrings like a sweet melody that keeps replaying in the head. The more she kept replaying how cool and comforted she felt in his arms, the more she hugged her pillow, wanting to be in his arms right now.
A smile played on her lips, and she turned on the bed, thinking about Neil and everything about him which was just perfect. He was an independent man, had his own business which flourished well, good sense of humor and a pretty charming smile, his personality was twice as beautiful than his appearance and his heart was purer than gold, humble and down-to-earth and more importantly, cherished and spoilt by his family
Family
Aarohi gulped, now her eyes opened wide and she remembered how her Bade Papa had untied her anklets, and once again, that smile returned.
Things were getting better, not the best, but she would take it.
"Kehte hai ki bhagwan se sacche dil se maang lo, toh murad puri ho hi jaati hai," Akshara's voice from besides made Aarohi to switch the lamp light and face her sister, who was eyeing her with a bright smile. "Par mujhe nahi pata tha ki meri murad itni jaldi puri ho jayegi."
"Oye drama queen," Aarohi chuckled at her elder sister, "raat ke dhai baje hai," She said glancing at her mobile screen, "aur kaunsi murad puri ho gayi teri? Abhi se shaadi ki?"
Akshara clicked her tongue, making the tsk sound, "nahi nahi, meri behen Aaru raat ke dhai baje smile jo kar rahi hai,"
To that Aarohi rolled her eyes, "tune bhagwan se ye maanga ki teri behen Aaru raat ke dhai baje smile kare?"
"Nahi paagal," Akshara threw her the pillow as Aarohi got slapped into it, "Yaar tu na pura mood aur moment kharab kar deti hai."
Akshara and her mischief, Aarohi got up at once as she made way to her sister's bed, she was for sure going to miss having Akshara besides her this way. "Arrey meri Akshu, meri common girl," Aarohi snuggled in her bedsheet and hugged Akshara from behind, her head on the latter's arm, "I was kidding,"
"TU JAA YAHA SE..." Akshara roared aloud trying to shrug her off but Aarohi held her more tightly, "Aarohi Karthik Goenka you better get off me!"
"Nahi, thode dinn hi reh gaye hai," Aarohi sighed, and Akshara stopped struggling, "phir toh pata nahi kab aise..."
On the sadder note, Akshara turned to face Aarohi, "Life is changing isn't it?"
"And fast," Aarohi replied, hugging her sister and Akshara placed her chin on Aarohi's soft hair, "aise lagta tha kal hi hum aangan main khel rahe the."
"Aur kal hi tu aur main ek dusre se ladte rahe the."
"Aur kal toh tu chali jayegi..." Aarohi sniffed, realisation dawning to her that very soon she is going to be alone in her room, and alone in her life too. "Tu mujhe bhul toh nahi jayegi right?" Akshara was horrified at Aarohi's teary question and she immediately answered with a 'paagal hai kya tu'
"You don't know Akshu," Aarohi replied, letting few drops of tears roll down on her face, "I will legit be so alone with you gone. Pehle Kairav bhaiya bhi wahi kehte the, but then he got married and is with his wife and his new family like he should be, and then you will join the Birlas' and will get busy with your new family, like you should and Aarohi Goenka is going to be sidelined forever after that. Her Highness is going to die alone without her family."
Akshara's heart melted on Aarohi's broken speech and her soft voice, "Queens apni legacy khud banate hai meri jaan," Akshara and Aarohi sat back on the bed as she cupped Aarohi's face in her hands, "and you are our Queen, you don't need anyone but you aur aisa ho hi nahi sakta ki meri Aaru akele pad jayegi. Everyone loves you here, and you know that."
Aarohi shook her head, "No they don't," She sniffed, wiping her runny nose with the back of her hand, "they love you, they are proud of you, but not me. Kabhi kabhi mujhe lagta hai ki main adopted hu, shayad issliye..."
"Tu raat ke dhai baje thapad khayegi, sach bata rahi hu main." Aarohi chuckled when Akshara raised her hand in warning, "you know I was super jealous of you when we were little? I hated you because mom aur dad, even bhaiya, tujhe saari attention dete the aur mujhe nahi aur phir main..."
"phir tu uth-patang harkate karke unka attention leti thi and I hated that."
They both chuckled, as Aarohi lay her head on Akshara's shoulder, "you know the best thing about all the tragedies in our lives, Aaru?" Aarohi shook her head, holding Akshara's hand, "you, us," She said, calming Aarohi's panting and anxious heartbeats, "I got my mom and dad both in you, and my best friend too. All this would not have happened if the past was to change." She said, sighing, "therapy main pucha tha mujhe whether I wanted to go back and change the past, save what we lost."
"you don't want to save what we lost?"
"I wanted to," Akshara smiled, meeting Aarohi's curious gaze, "but not risking what I have right now, I'd rather go through hundreds and thousands of nightmares if it means to have you with me, behna."
Aarohi now cried, "I hate you for making me cry,"
"And I love you too."

"Cute lag rahi ho," Aarohi bit her cheeks to refrain from blushing, "waise khule baalon main aur sundar lagti ho." Aarohi gulped, gripping the fork tightly as Neil chuckled, sitting back in his seat and enjoying his breakfast while the entire family were in a rush for the mehendi function that evening.
Aarohi gave Neil a smug smile and tied her hair in a loose bun, "khush?"
"Kya chipkali, loosen up," Neil laughed, at her narrowed gaze, "aur waise bhi, main soch raha tha ki aaj mehendi ki function main, I could get my kiss back you know?"
"What are you two talking about since forever?" Abhimanyu leaned in, he was always the curious guy, "mehendi ke function main kya?"
"Woh bhai aapki saali...Ouch," Neil groaned rubbed his shin where Aarohi had landed a hurtful kick, "Aarohi."
"Haan meri saali Aarohi hai ye pure Hotel ko pata hai," Abhimanyu hit Neil's head, and the poor guy now rubbed the back of his head with one hand, his shin with the other.
"Woh ye toh paagal hai," Aarohi cleared her throat, "isse ignore karo, Akshara is calling you." She pointed at Akshara who was busy in a conversation with Shefali and Tara about the evening, and while Abhimanyu turned towards his to-be wife, Aarohi glared at Neil. "Idiot ho tum," She muttered under her breath and Neil glared back at her.
"Ek toh tumne mujhpe physical assault kiya upar se mujhe hi attitude"
"Physical assault?"
"Haan, you kicked me, didn't you?"
"I did. Because you deserved it."
"Well then get ready for the evening then, because abh penalty lagegi."
Aarohi tilted her head, "You know what, I know for a fact that you are not going to kiss me in front of our family and the hundreds of relatives, and I am not going to go anywhere without someone I know," She challenged him and Neil smirked, nodding his head, "so bring it on. If you manage to sneak in your penalty, toh interest main khud tumhe dungi."
"Challenge kar rahi ho mujhe?" Neil asked to which Aarohi ate the apple piece with an innocent shrug, "alright Aarohi Goenka," He leaned in again, "aaj bach ke rehna, kyuki kiss toh tumhe karke rahunga."
"Challenge accepted."
And with that Neil got off from the table, not before pulling Aarohi's hairpin and letting her hair drop down on her back and while he smiled, she rolled her eyes but with a smile too.
