41. truth is out
"Talk to me."
"Neil, mujhe tumse koi baat nahi karni."
"Too bad, I'm not letting you go until you speak to me, until we have a proper conversation. You just cannot assume stuff, rant about what you thought happened and leave without listening to the other side."
Aarohi was upset, heartbroken and now extremely furious at the man who had pulled her away with him only so they could talk. She didn't want to talk, she just wanted to leave. However, that was not possible considering how he had pinned her to the wall of his room, and she was getting a taste of how stubborn he was.
"You cannot hold me hostage like this," She answered, glaring at him, "and I don't want to talk to you. Just let me go!"
"Fine," Neil rested his arm against the wall, caging her completely, "then stand here for the night. I don't mind watching you for the rest of the time."
Aarohi gritted her teeth, "tumhari problem kya hai,"
"Problem main nahi, tum create kar rahi ho. Bina baat sune faisla kar diya. Do you even have the slightest idea what rubbish you said out there?" Aarohi was startled at how angry Neil was, and she gulped, resting her back on the wall. "Tumne almost behen ko panic attack gift kiya, I hope you know that."
That worried Aarohi, and replaced her anger with concern, her facial expressions softened immediately. "So you brought me here to tell me how stupid of a sister I am?" She retorted, done with how she was to be blamed for everything.
Neil rolled his eyes, "Aarohi you need to understand..."
"What?" She tilted her head, meeting his eyes, "ki tumne meri behen ke wajah se mujse dosti ki thi? Or the fact that everything we did in these two weeks just an ulterior motive for you to uncover the secrets I hold?" She replied and with her angry words, her angry tears filled her eyes too making Neil to listen to the woman. "You tell me Neil, ki tumhe kaisa lagega if I were to befriend you only because someone asked me too. And whatever we had..." She paused, taking a deep breath, more like an exhausted sigh, "what we had, what we did, all started because you wanted to play detective?"
"Tum galat samaj rahi ho, Aarohi." Neil stepped back, shaking his head. "I know bhabhi aur meri baat hui thi par..."
"Par kya?" Aarohi felt the lump in her throat again, every moment of theirs was now tainted. "It makes me feel so stupid, so stupid to tell you everything about my life only for you to go rat it out!" She held her head, the lack of food and energy was getting to her. "You broke my trust Neil, you broke my trust. The one thing I had which wasn't broken." She cried, miserably failing to stand strong. "Who gave you the fucking right to do this?"
Neil gulped, remorseful yet determined to set this right. "Aarohi, maine humari koi bhi baat Akshara bhabhi se nahi kahi, she doesn't know anything other than the fact that you're opening upto me. That's it. She never asked me what you spoke to me, I never told her anything, nothing." He explained, trying to get the misunderstanding cleared. "All she wanted was to be a good sister and all I wanted was for you to be okay."
"So I'm not okay?" Aarohi wiped her tears, slightly pushing Neil away, "is that why you decided to fool around with me? I'm now what, a sympathy case to you? Aarohi bechari, uske saath rehte hai, uski help kar dete hai, right? That's why you did this? To help me? Fix me."
"You're not listening at all Aarohi. You don't even know how grave your accusations are! Why in the world would I ever betray you?"
"Why would you not? Tumhe tumhari family bohot pyaari hai, toh tumne apne bhai ki hone waali biwi ke liye, uski behen ki help ki! And main idiot ki tarah tumhare saath thi," Aarohi's headache was increasing by the second, yet she had so much to say. "For the first time I thought I had someone who was with me because he wants to and not because he had to." She met his eyes, her vision was blurry because of the tears, which she kept wiping with the back of her hand. "Out of everyone, Neil, out of everyone tumhe main mili help karne ke liye? And you're here with some nerve to tell me to understand? Why is it so hard for people to understand me!"
Neil wanted to tell her, he should tell her, maybe she'll know then that whatever he did had no motive than just his love for her.
But he couldn't, Aarohi won't like it, he knew and he'd rather listen to her yell at him than tell her the truth. More than letting her know, he was afraid how'd she react to it.
"You know what, idiot tum nahi, main hu. Stupid hu, sabse badi idiot hu that I believed for once that someone would understand me for me and not for Akshara." Aarohi pressed her forehead, she really wanted to leave this place, it was suddenly getting too suffocating. "It's always about her isn't it, its always about Akshu, for everyone." Aarohi cried, again, "I... I..." She choked on her words, gasping and Neil held her. However she got out of his hold, "don't touch me."
Neil watched her stumble and hold her head. "Aarohi," He held her, "you're so fucking stubborn, I hope you know that." She glared at him, and he let her go. "So you're not going to even give me two minutes to explain my side?"
She gulped, wiping her tears. "If you have a genuine reason other than being my sister's helper, then yes else this conversation and whatever we had, is over." She waited for him to speak up, but Neil held his breath.
"If I really tell you why I was with you, would you still leave?" He asked, Aarohi's heartbeats now louder. "Main toh sach bol dunga, tum sunn pauogi?"
Aarohi was now hesitant, she'd rather stay with this lie than be encountered with a truth which would do no good. "I need to leave," She shook her head, and Neil watched her blankly, running away from the mere thought of being loved.
"Sach batao Aarohi," He spoke from behind her, standing still, hands folded across his chest, "tumhe darr lag raha, hai na?" His soft voice was alarmingly powerful, as she held the doorknob. Her feet stood frozen at his words, eyes refusing to turn and face him. "Darr iss baat ka ki main kuch aisa na bol du ki tum woh face hi na kar pao."
"Tum kehna kya chahte ho?" She turned, hand still on the knob, "that you have another reason for being with me for the last two weeks?"
Neil chuckled, humorless and hurt, "I think you know it don't you? You know what the reason was?" He tilted his head, smiling. "You know that I..."
"Neil," She cut him off, pointing her finger at him, "just don't."
"Don't what?" He took the steps towards her, "don't tell you the truth? Because you're a coward to face reality and rather prefer to live behind your stony walls and plastic personality?" She gulped, in sheer pain, "or is it because you feel it too, don't you?"
"Neil..."
"Mana kar do, Aarohi." He leaned in, a silent whisper and a hard truth, "deny it, then," She lowered her gaze when their noses touched and he leaned in. "deny that you love me Aarohi," He whispered in her ear, "because I cannot deny the fact that I love you and everything I did for you was because I loved you." Aarohi shut her eyes, his words tugging at her heartstrings. "I love you," He whispered again, "There, my truth is out, but when are you going to stop running?"
Aarohi looked at him, clearly trying to catch a lie but she knew it was no lie. There was nothing but truth, something she had demanded from him.
"I love you Aarohi Goenka, I love you for you, for me," Their noses touched and Aarohi couldn't escape the intensity she was wrapped with him and his scent so close to her. "I love you for us."
