Gerard Way wanted to escape his life.

There were few methods to achieve this that weren't permanent.

He could read.

He could write.

He could listen to the same song on repeat until the lyrics were practically running through his bloodstream.

Sometimes he wrote songs. They weren't very good.

He didn't have many friends.

He didn't have any, in fact.

He had his brother, but there's only so much entertainment and comfort you can get from a Super-Mario-World-obsessed 13-year-old with staticky hair and glasses. Gerard wasn't close with Mikey, but if he really needed someone, Mikey and Mario were there.

Sleep wasn't an option. His 'rest' was not rest at all, but plagued by paralysis and things he'd really rather not think about. He didn't even have a pet to cuddle with when he woke up frozen and afraid.

Gerard was an average height. He had short brown hair that sort of stuck out, and he was totally "the shy kid" in all of his classes, which he really hated.

No one talked to him, so he didn't talk back. That's it.

He was a tragic figure, although he hated to think of himself like that. He'd rather think of it as unlucky.

Gerard Way was pretty sure he was the loneliest boy in the world.
