I sit on the edge of the lagoon with my legs in the water and my boots next to me. The water moves as the wind blows through, disturbing the surface of the water. Memories of saving that Sea Shocker from Scauldrons pops into my head. A coo breaks me from my thoughts and I look over at Nightwing, curled up on the warm sand.
I chuckle in a amusement and her ears twitch slightly, meaning she heard me. She made a quick recovery thanks to the healers on Mala's Island. I was afraid that she'd never be able to fly again after getting hit by that boulder. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. All she needed was rest and time to recover.
I'm just glad she's okay, if- if she'd been crippled or worse. I shake my head to get rid of those thoughts. "Nightwing," I call to her and something in my voice caught her attention. She immediately stood up and stretched out her limbs before coming over to me. I gaze down at her sadly and she grumbles softly, laying her head in my lap, lowering back down.
I stroke her head and look out across the water. She's been apart of my life for so long. I can't imagine a world without her in it. She growls sadly and nuzzles the underside of my jaw, slipping her head under my chin. I rest my hand on the back of her neck and close my eyes, smiling.
I've lost so many people already and I just can't lose anymore. I spent so long trying to find a place where I belonged. Where I could finally feel like I'm where I need to be. And I found it. With Nightwing and the other riders. I found it with Hiccup.
Nightwing grumbles and pulls away. I open my eyes when I hear the sound of wing flaps. I look over my shoulder and smile. "Hey, I've been looking for you," she says and dismounts from Windshear's back, coming over to me. "Well, here I am."
Nightwing races over to the silver dragon, starting their own conversation. She settles down beside me, criss crossing her legs, and I look over at her. "How are you doing? With everything."
"I'm fine. Nightwing is getting her strength back and she's got a lot of energy to burn off."
"No, I mean... with Dagur. Him being gone?" Her voice is gentle and I can tell she feels guilty for all the fighting we did when our brother was here. I look down at my hands resting in my lap. "I don't know how to answer that, Heather. He was my brother. He died saving our lives."
I shrug my shoulders and tuck strands of hair behind my ear. If we'd just listened to him in the first place he would still be alive. He'd be here. But instead he's gone. First my mother, then father. And now my brother's dead. Everyone I grew up with is gone.
Except for Nightwing of course. And yeah Heather is family, but I didn't grow up with her. When we first met we were strangers that just happened to be related. We're closer now and I'm glad to have her, but it's not the same. I don't think it ever will be.
For now I'm just grateful to still have family. "I'm sorry. It's only been a couple weeks."
"It's alright, Heather. Having you here helps. A lot." Surprise enters her face and I smile warmly. "Really?"
"Of course. You're my sister. Everything's better when you're around." She smiles and her eyes brighten. "I'm glad." I pull my legs out of the water and roll my trousers back down before pulling my shoes back on.
We make a small campfire so that I dry off faster and past the time chatting about whatever comes to mind. I have island patrol in a couple of hours so I'm happy to spend my time with my sister. I watch with amusement as Windshear and Nightwing chase each other around. I'm taken by surprise when I feel fingers gathering up strands of my hair.
"Heather. I told you I don't want my hair in a braid. Just cause we're twins doesn't mean we have to look exactly alike."
"Oh, relax I'm not doing a full braid. Just a small one. You'll look great. Trust me." I sigh and look down into the flames as she gathers up the hair at my temples, pulling it back behind me. "There all done," she announces after a few minutes of working.
