Someone's knocked on the door six times in the last two minutes. Whoever it is better have a good reason for making me get out of bed at six o'clock in the morning.
I mean I was up anyway because of Isla, but still.
I wrench open the door and Axcel literally falls through.
He curses under his breath and stands up straight.
'Why were you leaning on my door?' I ask.
'You were the one who was taking your own sweet time to answer it. Why did you open it so quickly?'
'How was I supposed to know you were leaning on it?'
He rolls his eyes. 'Come on, it's time to go.'
'Go where Axcel, it's six o'clock in the morning.'
'To work Alexis. Rosa is here... somewhere, to look after Isla and take her to the new house.'
'Axcel-'
'Alexis, go and get changed.'
'Into what.'
'Something that does not classify as pyjamas, so we can go to the new house and get you one of your suits.'
Rosa appears behind him, looking and sounding breathless. Her face is bright red and her breaths are short and laboured. She sounds like she just ran a half marathon.
She takes in a deep breath, coughs and then looks at me.
'Do you have any water?' She says.
I step to the side. 'It's in the kitchen, help yourself.'
She scurries past me towards the kitchen and I turn back to Axcel.
'Seriously, what is with that lady?' I ask.
'Leave her alone, she's a sweet woman. Go and get changed.'
'Axcel, I can't just leave Isla with a random woman I've met once. She's my child.'
'Alexis, I get that, I have a son. I know what it's like, but you took the job so you really don't have a choice.'
'You have a son?'
'We can talk about it later.' He says.
He reaches out his hands, places his hands on my shoulders and turns me towards my bedroom.
I shake him off, roll my eyes, go get changed and say goodbye to Isla.

We're in the car for about five minutes, before the silence becomes overwhelming.
I clear my throat. 'So, you have a son.'
'Yep.'
'What's his name?'
'Ryker.' He says quietly.
'How old is he?'
'Three. Or three and a half as he likes to say.' He laughs like he's thinking about something in the past.
Finally...now I can confirm my suspicions about Evie.
'So...
is Evie his mum?' I ask.
He glances at me and then looks back at the road.
'Yep.'
'Yep, what?'
'Yeah, she's his mum. What else do you want to know?'
'What's she like?'
He thinks about his answer before letting out a loud breath. 'She's fucking difficult.'
'Oh?'
'Yeah, she doesn't let me see Ryker, she's always complaining about me when I try my hardest to do everything for her and she keeps threatening to take me to court even though I've done nothing wrong.'
'Why do you put up with her then?'
'It's not like I can do much about it, I can't abandon Ryker and I can't get full custody of him either. I work too much.'
'I'm sure there's something you could do.'
He shakes his head. 'He's comfortable where he is, it would be selfish of me to take him away from that.'
'Sounds like you're a good dad. Does Alice know about him?' I ask.
'Yeah. She's meeting him this weekend actually.'
'Aw good. So Evie knows about Alice?'
He shifts in his seat. 'No.'
I look at him. 'Alice knows about Evie though.'
'Yes.'
'Right. Um, don't you think Evie has a right to know about Alice if she's meeting his son?'
'Well I- I was going to- Just-' He stammers.
Before he can form his excuse, his phone begins to ring.
'Speak of the devil.' He mutters as he answers the phone.
'Do you mind if I put it on speaker?' He whispers to me.
I shrug and he presses a button and places his phone in the holder next to him.
'Eve?'
'Axcel, I'm taking Ryker away this weekend.' She says.
'So...' Axcel says.
'So, you can't see him. Obviously.'
'Evie you can't do that. I haven't seen him in ages.'
'Axcel, it's not that deep. You can see him next weekend.'
'No Evie. You promised this weekend.'
'What's so important about this weekend?' She asks.
I raise my eyebrows and glance at Axcel.
His knuckles are going white with how hard he's gripping the steering wheel and he's glaring at the car infront like he wants to drive right into them.
I'm never going to see Isla again if this man keeps on driving in this state.
'Axcel, are you deaf? Answer my question. Also, Ryker's going to need spending money.'
I roll my eyes and tap Axcel on the shoulder. His head snaps towards me and I signal for him to pull over.
He does what I ask and then I mouth to him to take a walk and he does just that.
For half an hour.
When he finally gets back in the car he looks calm.
'Looks like Alice is going to meet Evie this weekend.' He says whilst starting up the car.
'Sounds fun. You should let me know how that goes.'
He laughs.
'You know, I thought you hated children.' I say.
'I do, but Ryker's my child so he's different. Also, he knows how to shower.'
Then it's my turn to laugh.
Maybe Axcel's not so bad. He is a normal person after all.
