Kate Alliana

"I'm sure most of you already know me, but for those who don't, I am Kate Alliana Viktoria Marcos Araneta. I am the newly elected Student Government (SG) Council President here at De La Salle University. Being elected to this position is both an honor and a responsibility. I am deeply grateful to all my fellow LaSallians who voted for me with such sincerity. I'm also thankful to all my friends and classmates who supported me throughout the campaign. Rest assured, I will do my best to serve you all to the fullest, working tirelessly to create an environment where every student is valued, and no one is left behind." I solemnly said as the audience erupted into applause.

This was my acknowledgment speech, after winning the highest position a student could hold at this university—SG President. Once I finished, I was congratulated by teachers, guest speakers, and our principal.

"Congratulations, Ms. Araneta. Well-deserved."

"Thank you, ma'am," I replied with a small smile.

After the proclamation, we headed back to our classrooms. After several lessons, it was finally dismissal time. I sighed, knowing I had to go home.

Another round of loud arguments would await me—familiar, tiring, and never-ending.

"Uuwi na po ba tayo, ma'am?" Kuya Joel, my driver, asked.

I glanced at the mirror and replied, "Yes, kuya..." My smile was weak.

I opened my phone, checking my Instagram—the only social media platform I actively use.

99+ requests

I frowned. Why did I have so many requests? And why did people keep following me? I rarely post photos—only when I feel like it. Curious, I decided to open the request messages. To my surprise, most of them were looking for my mom.

Some had profile pictures of my mother, while others had her name. I guess they were her fans—very dedicated ones at that. I scrolled through notifications and noticed there were plenty of people tagging me. One post caught my eye: a compiled video of me.

Wow. These people are talented.

"Ma'am, andito na po tayo." Kuya Joel's voice interrupted my thoughts.

I thanked him as I stepped out of the car. I could hear my brothers, Kuya Luis and Kuya Alfonso, watching basketball inside the house.

I braced myself for another argument, though I secretly hoped for a peaceful evening. As I was about to go upstairs, my presence didn't go unnoticed.

"Ayah! Aren't you going to give us a kiss?" Kuya Luis teased.

My nickname is Ayah, short for Alliana, though some call me Iya.

I couldn't avoid them, so I walked over to give them a kiss and a hug.

"Heard you won, congratulations, anak!" Dad said, which caught me off guard. I hadn't told them about the election.

I swallowed hard, "Y-yes, how did you know?" I asked, slightly anxious.

"Facebook," Kuya Alfonso replied casually.

I bit my lip, feeling embarrassed. "Your mom is upset and sulking because you didn't inform her," Dad added. His words made my stomach tighten.

Mom is a very hands-on mother. She likes to know what's happening in our lives, especially in moments like these.

"Suyo well, Viktoria!" Kuya Alfonso teased, making my discomfort even worse.

I quickly excused myself to shower and change before heading to Mom and Dad's room. I knocked softly before entering.

"Hi, Mom..."

She was reading a book, clearly pretending not to hear me.

She glanced up, her expression unreadable. "What are you doing here? Do you need something?" she asked coolly.

"No..." I answered, giving her a kiss on the cheek before wrapping my arms around her tightly.

"I'm reading, don't disturb me." She tried to push me away, but it was different than usual. Mom usually doesn't mind me being clingy. But today, there was a certain distance.

"Are you upset?" I asked softly, noticing her tone.

"I don't have time for your jokes, Kate Alliana!" she snapped, though there was no real heat behind it. I could tell she was pretending to be mad, but it didn't feel the same.

"Come on, Mom. You can't resist me, Victoria!" I teased.

Instead of leaving, I climbed onto the bed and hugged her even tighter.

"Kate Alliana Viktoria Marcos Araneta!" she exclaimed, though her voice was softer than expected. She tried to pull my arms off, but I held on stubbornly.

"Sorry, Mom. I really planned on telling you when I won," I explained, pouting. I knew she wouldn't stay mad if I acted sweet.

"Take your arms off first," she said, trying to keep a straight face.

"If you're sincere, you should apologize in Filipino," Mom teased, knowing that Filipino isn't my first language.

"You're making fun of me!" I complained, pretending to be upset. But she could see through me and started laughing.

"I'm not, ha! Okay, bahala ka. Hindi tayo bati," she replied playfully.

"Okay, okay!" I said, giving in.

"Pasensya na, Mommy, hindi ko po sinasadya." I said, trying to sound sincere, though my American-British accent still slipped through.

Mom raised an eyebrow but tried not to laugh. "You really can't say it properly, huh? You've been in the Philippines for years," she teased.

"Did you just roll your eyes at me?" Mom asked, raisinga an eyebrow in disbelief.

"No, my eyes hurt," I lied, trying to deflect. Trying to act like nothing happened.

"Sus, come here!" she said, pulling me into a tight hug. She kissed my forehead gently. "Apology accepted."

"Congratulations, Mommy is so proud of you, love..." she whispered, holding me close.

"Thanks, Mommy. I love you!" I exclaimed, hugging her tightly, feeling a sense of relief wash over me.

"I love you more!" she replied, her voice soft but full of warmth.
