Chapter 9 - Don't mess with her

Irene was cleaning her room, she has been analysing few papers--declutering for short. Habang ginagawa niya 'yun, her bedside drawef caught her attention as if it wants to be opened.

And she did.

There she saw a small red box, she took it out at umupo sa kama upang tignan ito.

It was their wedding band, hers to be exact. Tinago niya parin ito despite being aware na wala ng pag-asa para magkabalikan sila. Irene accepted it, a long time now.

Kinuha niya ang singsing sa lagayan nito at unti unting isinukat sa daliri niya, a memory she buried in the deepest corner of her heart suddenly flashed.

"In the name of God, I, Maria Victoria Irene Romualdez Marcos, take you, Gregorio Maria Araneta III, to be my husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part."

Forgive you in times that you need my forgiveness.

Understand you in the best way possible.

Be right by your side forever and ever, This is my solemn vow, in front of God, our family, and close friends.

Irene glanced on her finger, the ring suits her well. Of course it does, they both chose this to be their wedding band. She wonders if nakay Greggy pa din ba ang sakanya, or maybe he'd thrown it away?

"Understand you.."

"Til' death do us part,"

Irene realized that what she had done for him wasn't enough, the understanding wasn't enough, what if she made an effort?

What if she tried even harder?

Would they end up still?

Would I be happier?

I hope you knew how much.. I cared, I loved, and I fought.

And no matter where life takes us, I will always care for you.

Hindi na nga namalayan ni Irene ang mga luha niya, she indeed missed Greggy-- the love of her life, her home, her comfort, and her pillar of strength.

The ex couple didn't have the chance to convey their sentiments, they were blinded with ego, hatred, and sadness.

Irene immediately wiped her tears and returned to her poise when she heard a knock on her door, sa pagmamadali niya, hindi na nga niya namalayan na hindi niya naibalik sa drawer ang singsing.

"Alfie, do you need something?" tanong niya sa anak, Alfonso kissed her mother's forehed at pumasok sa kwarto.

"Are you busy? What are you doing?"

"I was decluttering some of the papers and stuff, I decided to clean.." sabi ni Irene habang nakapameywang ito at tinitignan ang anak na maglibot sa kwarto niya.

In an unforeseen circumstance, nahagip ni Alfonso ang kamay ng ina at agad na lumapit upang tignan ito.

"This is yours and dad's wedding band, diba? You're wearing it still?.."

Irene was flasbbergast, hindi niya nga pala ito natanggal.

"Um--no, while cleaning nakita ko ito sa drawer and I wondered kung kasya pa sakin kaya sinukat ko and guess what, it still fits perfectly.." sagot ni Irene, trying to sound as if it's not a big deal.

"It looks good on you though, why don't you wear it nalang often.. And aside from that, I know that you miss dad, and the love didn't fade."

Irene's eyes widened with what she heard from her son, hindi niya magawang ideny ang mga usapang ito kay Alfonso at Kate. Luis is nonchalant, he settles for the first answer, if you answered his question then that's it, no further discussion hindi katulad ng panganay at bunsong anak.

"Alf, I will always care for your dad. I will always remember how he cared and loved me when still has the chance,"

Alfonso hugged her mother, "I adore you, mom. Thanks for being the best and for being strong at the same time. We appreciate you," he said that made Irene pout.

"Thanks, manong.. You and your siblings are the reason why I continue to live life to the fullest. I love you, anak."

"I love you, best mom."

Nasa Ilocos kami ngayon, we've been here since the celebration of mothers' day. I was told by my grandmother to at least send a video greeting literally emphasized the video, to my mother. Manong Alfie and kuya Luis pleaded also pleaded for this which was seconded by tita Imee and my cousins, they left me with no choice but to agree.

This is so stressful, I took the video a couple of times 'til I found the perfect one. It's cringe and awkward in my end.

The video only took one minute less, a short video because I don't have anything to say except for Happy Mother's Day! is it even?

I'm on call with my brothers for two consecutive days because of this surprise as they call it greeting. A girl younger than me was caught, she called kuya Luis, and literally shouting her lungs out.

And you know what's worse, it is that she glared at me for god sake I don't even know what I did to deserve such a treat.

"Who was that ba?"

'Si Janella, I think may pinapakisuyo lang kay kuya Alfie..'

"Can't she do it on her own? Kailangan pa talagang may tumulong sa kanya?"

'Pabayaan mo na, magkaka wrinkles ka sige. Wag mo nang pansinin masyado,'

"She's irritating and I'm irritated. I don't know her yet and parang ayoko na siyang makilala pa, we're obviously talking and she will shout like that? She's rude.."

'Hindi kayo magkakasundo kung nandito ka, promise. And oh well, wala din naman siya kung andito ka sana..'

"I think so too, and I thank heavens kasi wala ako diyan. She's rude, kuya. Hindi manlang nag-excuse and instead shouted kay kuya Alfie when siya yung may kailangan.."

"Aya, enough okay? Okay na, hindi lang natin siya kaugali.."

"Of course, hindi talaga! I would never accept a family member with an attitude like that."

'Kate, enough na. Hindi itotolerate ni mom yung words mo kung kausap mo siya.'

"Okay, sorry. Naiinis lang talaga ako, I just hope I won't encounter her with that attitude because I don't know what else can I do.."

'Okay I'm back!" sabi ni Alfonso.

"So what did that lady made you do, manong? Is it something big.."

'May ipinakuha lang, can't reach daw..'

"Can't she use a chair? Ang laki naman ng problema niya,"

'Hey, tama na.'

"Okay, I'm gonna cool down first. I'll end the call na, let's just chat."

'Yung pinag-usapan natin ha, you promised already!'

"Oo nga, I'll send it mamaya agad."

They end the call, Luis and Alfie looked at each other in success.

"Maldita nga talaga.." sabi ni Luis.

"Abogada eh."
