Madison
I woke up beside him who is still asleep. I should not worry at all because he is my husband, right? I tell myself. We are married, there's nothing to be embarrassed about.
My phone rings. I stood and grabbed my phone. It's Dr. Hackenson calling.
Me: Hello?
Dr. Hackenson: I'm sorry about calling earlier this morning, but I have some good news. Mr. Nolan is responsive since last night.
Me: That's great. I'll see him later!
I spoke with joy.
Finally, we can know what happened the night Charles went missing. I feel so relieved that after all these years, everything will be cleared.
"What did the doctor say?" Charles asked.
"We can speak to Alfred now" I told him.
"That's good news" Charles said.
"We better go as early as we can" I told him.
"We should." He replied.
--------------------------------
We didn't talk about what happened to us last night. It's like it never actually happened, it didn't feel like marriage at all, like friends with benefits at some point. But it doesn't matter at the moment, what matters is that Alfred's fine, he can tell us what the hell happened. I'm dying to know, I cannot wait to hear him say it.
-----------------------------
At the hospital, we first met Dr. Hackenson.
"It's a miracle that he woke up, it happens rarely to patients like him." the Doctor said.
"We didn't expect this to happen too, but we are glad he is awake now." I told him.
"You can talk to him, but the problem is he can no longer move half of his body from the waist down. His spinal injury caused him to be paralyzed." the doctor said.
"What matters is he is alive." I told him.
"Can we see him now?" Charles asked.
"Of course" The doctor said.
Charles and I entered Alfred's room. We saw him just looking at the window.
"Alfred." I said his name.
He turned his head around and was surprised to see me.
"Madison" he said with disbelief.
"Charles." he said Charles' name.
"We're glad you're alright" Charles said as if he actually remember him.
"I'm glad you are alright too" Alfred said.
"Alfred, the thing is, I don't remember what happened that night. And I am here to know that." Charles said to him.
"He lost his memories, he can't recall anything." I told Alfred.
"Look at me, I can't move my legs. It's better for me to have perished that night than to live like this." Alfred said.
"Don't say that, Alfred." I told him.
"Will you tell us what happened?" Charles asked him.
"The thing is ..." he said.
What's the matter with him? Why won't he say anything??
"Alfred I'm begging you, we wanted answers." I told him.
"It's not that I don't want to tell you. I just don't remember what exactly happened." he said.
"Tell us, I really need to know what happened. My sister is blaming Madison for all this." Charles said.
"I remember the party, but what happened before is a blur." Alfred said.
"Fuck" Charles asked.
Alfred looked at me.
"Madison, can you get me some water?" Alfred asked me.
"Alright, maybe you two should talk, I'll be out for awhile." I told them.
------------------------------------------
Charles
Fuck. I am suppose to be the only one with no memories.
"The truth is, I know what happened to you." Alfred spoke.
"Then why did you say you don't remember?" I asked him. Why does he have to play such silly games.
"I am no longer the man I used to be, hours ago I woke up and realized I can no longer take care of myself. That I wished I have died years ago." Alfred said.
"Don't you think, I don't feel the same? I can't remember my life, my wife, my children and the man I used to be!" I told him.
"But you can walk, you lost your memories but you can make new ones with your family... but look at me, I cannot walk, I have no family, I have no one." Alfred replied.
He has a point. But why does he have to be like this?
"What do you want?" I asked him.
"I want Madison." Alfred said.
"Are you crazy?" I asked him.
"If that's what you think I am. CRAZY" Alfred replied.
"Then I don't want to know what happened to me." I told him. I will not just give Madison away like she's a toy.
"Alright." Alfred replied.
"Here's your water" Madison comes back.
"Is everything okay?" The doctor comes in too.
"Dr. Hackenson, Alfred can't remember the incident." Madison said.
"That's strange, he didn't have any brain injury from the accident." The Doctor replied.
"But it could be the trauma, his recollection of what happened can come back soon, maybe days, weeks or months. I can't be sure when exactly." The doctor added.
"That's good news!" Madison said.
"Maybe I can run some tests when Mr. Nolan feels better, just to make sure he's alright." The Doctor said.
"Thank you Doctor" Alfred said.
"I'll be back later." The Doctor said then he left.
"We should let him rest for now, Madison." I told her.
"Yes, you're right. We hope you'll be better" Madison said.
We said our goodbyes to him like he didn't ask me to have Madison. To be honest, I'm dying to know what the hell happened to me, but I don't want to trade Madison for those information.
"You're quiet." Madison said.
"I'm trying to remember him." I said to her.
"All I know is that you both used to be friends. I don't know about how your friendship went. The next thing I know is you're no longer close like you used to be because of my sister." Madison said.
"Maybe he won't remember the night I went missing" I told her.
"He will, you heard the doctor." Madison said.
"I'm not interested in knowing the past." I told her.
"Why? Don't you wanna know why you end up fake dead?" she said.
"It doesn't matter anymore." What matters is I'm back to you.
