Chapter 2

"Sally, isn't that your mom?" Bre asks. "Yup," I say through gritted teeth. My mom is a perfectionist. She wants a perfect little daughter that will follow in her footsteps. Spoiler alert, I'm not that little girl. I have no interest in physiatry. I want to write songs and perform on a stage. Not helping people who are probably more sane than me. "Thank you Dr. Will" my mom smiles at the crowd, "Well, here we are. April of your 8th grade year! Now is the time you choose what you want to do with your life. Would anyone like to share what career they might want?" Hands shoot up across the auditorium. My mom looks around the room and her gaze falls on me. Not me, not me, no- "Sally," Fuck "What career would you like to pursue?" Before I can think of a lie the truth flies out of my mouth, "I want to be a musician in Nashville." I'm dead. My mom's smile fades "Y-you don't want to be a psychiatrist like your mother?" Before I can answer I hear a loud laugh from a row down to the right. I look over and lo and behold Josie is dying. "Oh my god, I just put it together," Josie laughs, "You're Sally's mother! Oh, what a disappointment Sally must be!" Others begin laughing with her as my mom's face turns red from her trying to control her anger. Nope, I'm out! I jump up and speed walk out of the auditorium.

I run to the closest bathroom and lean on the sink. When I glance in the mirror I see tears rolling down my cheeks, "Fuck". I wipe my tears quickly and dry my face with a paper towel. "Sally!" Addie walks through the door closely followed by Bre. "Sally, why is your mom so upset? I mean, aren't parents supposed to support you?" Bre looks at me with concerned eyes. "Well, my mom isn't like that." I sigh, "My mom wants me to be a psychiatrist like her. It's really important to her. Josie's right, I am a disappointment." Bre and Addie look taken aback. The bell rings and I run outside the bathroom, pass Max, and to class.
