"Hello? Paislee are you ready? Are you here?" I heard Lori yell from downstairs.

I wiped the tears coming down my cheeks and blew out a breath. "Yes."

"Can I come upstairs, love? You don't sound too good."

"Yes," replied again. I was defeated.

I was more than ready to have this baby, and by the looks of it, my wish would come true very soon. I was approaching the day I would give birth and I knew this because of my low, big belly that caused me to be bed-ridden all day sometimes. Cleaning, getting out of bed, putting on shoes, and cooking were some of the hardest tasks of my life now that I was with child.

"Why the tears, honey?" Lori asked as she entered the bedroom.

"These stupid shoes! I've been trying to put them on for ten minutes and they won't work because my belly is in the way. I want to wear them so bad but—" I let out a sniffle. "I think they're too small."

"Well, we shouldn't cry over that. It's gonna' be okay."

"Easy for you to say when you can fit into your entire closet. I just want to go out and feel pretty."

"You always look pretty. Here, let me clasp your shoes. That's what friends are for after all." When she was done, she hopped back up and peered around the room. "What are these little slips of paper for?"

She was referring to the little notes that Deen left for me this morning. One on the nightstand, another on the dresser, and a third on my vanity. They were scattered around the room with little words of love and wisdom from Deen. It made my day every time.

"They're love notes from Deen. He put them there this morning while I was resting," I said. It made me smile even though I didn't feel good.

"How sweet! See, don't worry about not feeling pretty. Deen still thinks the world of you. Look what he wrote here."

She picked up a note from the nightstand and read it before I could tell her not to.

"Don't read that one!" I yelled. I was embarrassed because it was already too late.

Her eyes widened as she looked down at the slip of paper and slowly rested it on the nightstand again.

"If I could go back and not read that, I would take that opportunity in a heartbeat," Lori said. "Is this what you meant by sweet, innocent notes?"

My cheeks heated in embarrassment. "No! Most of the notes are just innocent fun."

"As a nurse and midwife, I have to say this though. You guys shouldn't be frolicking or doing—"

"We're not! Can we stop talking about this? I'm already embarrassed enough. Let's get out of this house instead of talking about me and Deen." I stood up frantically collecting my bag that lay beside me.
