Cruising through the streets of Jackson, I pondered on the past events from this week. Mostly, thoughts about my mother proceeded to take up space in my mind. I hadn't talked to anyone from that household except for my father. To make things even more complicated, my aunt, uncle, and cousin Leah were coming down to visit. How do you explain the family tension between us without mentioning Paislee? They wanted to see me sing at a gig at a local bar in town but it didn't look promising.

On the bright side, my father wanted to meet Paislee and me for breakfast today. He sounded excited over the phone over the phone and the way he urged me to invite Paislee made me smile. It sounded like any kind of outing would do my dad good at this point and when Paislee agreed to join us today, it made things better.

I pulled up to Paislee's apartment complex, parked, and hopped out my car so I could walk to her door. I knocked and waited for the door to open. I knew she was either going to be completely ready or trying to apply lipstick and put on heels at the same time.

"Hi, honey," Paislee greeted as she opened the door.

I rolled my eyes at the silly nickname and stepped into the house. I gave Paislee a quick kiss. "Hello."

"Don't roll your eyes, I'm trying to be endearing. I saw that Y'know."

"I know but that sounds so soft." I chuckled and stared at Paislee in front of me.

She smiled innocently before giggling. "Can I call you honey bun then?"

"What? No."

"How about pumpkin? That's cute for you. Maybe sweet pea even," Paislee listed.

"You are delusional. How 'bout that?" I gave her a fake smile to which she frowned.

She sashayed off further into the apartment. "I'm calling you pumpkin from now on."

"You're really not funny. Are you even ready? I think it's good if we're actually on time," I said.

Paislee rounded the corner with her purse in one hand and in the other she held a necklace.

"Please." She offered the necklace to me and I snapped it around the base of her neck quickly.

I kissed her exposed shoulder. "All done."

"Thank you, pumpkin," she said before laughing.

"You know what, can we just get in the car already and actually arrive at the place on time? I swear you're gonna' make my father wait and when he ask where we were, I'm blaming you," I said.

Paislee and I made it to the car where we had a quiet drive across town. Our fingers intertwined as I went between singing and conversing with Paislee about my father.
