DeenDean and I were going out to have a fun night with just the two of us since we had both been anchored down with various things in our life. Margaret had finally delivered a healthy and precious baby girl a couple of weeks ago and when Dean was summoned to work after a couple of days off, he had to juggle a newborn baby and a job at the same time. Claiming that he needed a short night off, he was dragging me out the house even though I protested for him to stay with Margaret. My request went through one ear and out the other and Dean had planned for us to have fun, laugh, and drink at a bar.
Currently, at the bar, cigar smoke filled the air from the smoking lounge and the sound of laughter and clinking glasses filled my ears. Dean and I sat at the bar away from the dancing crowd and live singing. I looked over to Dean as he appeared to be having a good time with a cigarette between his fingers. I had performed at this bar on a reckless night when someone had offered me the stage and because they liked my voice so much, I ended up singing the whole night and got free drinks because of it.
"You want?" Dean offered, sticking a cigarette out to me.
The offer was tempting but I hadn't smoked since Paislee came back in my life and didn't plan on breaking that habit anytime soon. "No, I'm good. Thank you though," I said.
Dean chuckled and put the cigarette back in its pack. "You haven't even parted your lips for a cig since you started dating Paislee. Softie."
"Save it and shut up. You should be proud of me."
"Women really change you, don't they?"
"Oh boy, more than I could've imagined. You can't be talking too much since you got Margaret pregnant and you have a baby. How's that going?"
"Obviously I'm out the house so that should be a sign," Dean said, drinking after. "I love being a parent already though, no doubt about that."
"How's Margaret?" I asked.
"She's good—look, I didn't come to y'all about family. I wanna drink and enjoy myself."
"Typical of you."
"Shut it." Dean blew a puff of smoke from his mouth. "Don't you come here a lot? Doesn't the owner know you or something?"
I nodded. "Yeah, I was expecting to see someone I knew but I guess not."
I knew how late it was but being in Dean's company made me look away from the clock and turn my attention to the live singers. I didn't think about Paislee at home or how I was even going to get home. I just drank like everyone around me was and watched the time pass by.
"Deen!"
My head turned behind me as Dean did the same. It wasn't the owner but instead the manager of the bar. When he saw my eyes through the dim lights, he grinned and pushed through people as he came through my way.
