Author's note: The picture is of Viktor.
Against my better judgment, I went to visit the Blue Moon pack the next day. It looked different than I thought it would. Viktor says it's changed a lot since Scott's death. It felt like it has a pall over it. I went to the pack house and knocked. No one answered I tried turning the knob but the door was locked. I knocked even harder. When that didn't work I yelled for someone open this door now.
"Using your command so soon," Viktor said, "I'm not saying nothing"
"Good keep it that way," I said, glaring at him.
The door was opened by a little girl. I couldn't remember her name so I said, "hello little girl is your mother home."
"No Mommy's not home," she said.
"Is your brother home?" I asked.
"No my brother's dead," she said, matter of factly.
"Are you talking about Scott?" I asked
"No Scott died a long time ago," she said.
I looked at Viktor. What could this possibly mean?
"Is your brother in the house?" I asked.
"No Mommy buried him,"
I looked at Viktor again.
What are we going to do?
What do you mean?
What can we do?
We don't know what's going on here.
The mother's not here. We can't just leave the girl.
"When will your mother be back?" I asked.
"Mommy said that she'd be back on Thursday," she said.
"On Thursday? Today's Tuesday. Did she miss coming back?" I asked.
"Yes. Mommy went to the store on Thursday and said she'd be right back and then she never came back," she said.
"Don't you have another sister?" I asked
"Yes, Katelyn. She went with Mommy," she said. "My name is Josephine but everyone calls me Joey."
Viktor, I don't know what's going on here but I do not feel comfortable leaving her here.
That's understandable but what do you want to do with her?
I was hoping you had some idea. Do we keep her until her mother returns?
I don't think we do that. Let's take her to the orphanage until her mother comes back.
We don't know this child. I do not want her around our children. If her mother doesn't come back in 6 months will revisit her coming to stay with us. By then she will have been evaluated.
Are you sure about that? It just seems cold.
Do you have a better solution? No?
I went inside and left a note, three notes actually, telling the mother what the daughter said and why we took her. I left my cell phone number in case she wanted to get in contact with me.
We took Joey to the orphanage with strict instructions that she was not up for adoption. If her mother never came and she proved herself trustworthy around children, then we would take her. The workers had more experience with children and would see warning signs before we did.
Now we're either going to have to appoint an Alpha which won't work or we might have to absorb them.
"What if you just set them up with a beta," I asked.
