Olivia POV
We got back to the house an hour ago, I have been staring at the letter the whole time thinking about what it might say. I had sent Luke to get ice cream from the shop and to let me have some alone time to read the letter. My mum's letters always seem to say the right thing. Last year she warned me that sometimes a boy can say and do all the right things but not mean them and told me about her high school boyfriend. Of course, now it relates to the whole thing with Sam. It's one of the reasons I like to stay in and read them because they give me a lot to think about.
After a while, I felt like Lukes going to be back soon so I just picked the envelope up and read it.
Dear Olivia Juliet Ortega,
Firstly, happy 18th birthday darling. I hope you have been successful in school, you were always a smart girl. When I was your age I was applying to university and impatient waiting to hear back. I hope you have some good options and whatever dream you have you are following.
If your dad has let his little girl have a boyfriend, I hope he is good to you. My advice is to find someone to treat you the way your dad treats me. Surprise trips, date nights, but also someone who is like your best friend. If/when you find someone like that, never let them go. Hold onto it forever because they are one of a kind.
In the next year, I hope you have a great time at university, meet new people, and try to get out of your comfort zone a bit. I met your father for the first time when I was at university so make sure you take the chance to meet different people.
If you have the chance, I would love for you to go to England. You will love it over there, go to the beaches, the mountains, enjoy the rain, the snow. Everything just experiences it all properly, not like you are a kid being dragged from place to place. I have a list attached to this letter of the sights you should go to see and what happened at each one.
Either way, I am so proud of my little girl being so grown up.
Enjoy being 18 my beautiful girl and we will talk next year.
Love mum xoxo
Luke poked his head into the room to see if I was ok. He knew I wanted to be alone to read the letter but also knew I would want him thereafter.
By this point I had tears in my eyes and was curled up re-reading the letter, "hey love..." he says gently unsure if to come in or not.
I look up at him, tears still in my eyes, "can I just have a hug..." I mumble not wanting to be alone.
He smiles lightly and comes to sit next to me wrapping his arms around my waist and holding me as I re-read the letter. This is the first time I've actually let someone be around me while reading my mum's letters since I was 10. After about 30 minutes of silence, I put the letter down. I had tears running down my face and my eyes felt all puffy. I turn to look at Luke, "thank you..."
"What did I do?" he chuckles, wiping the tears off my cheek with his thumb.
"Just for being you..." I smile slightly leaning my head on his chest. There was more I wanted to say but if I did I would probably burst out crying.
He chuckles lightly and kisses my head, "happy birthday love" he smiles still holding me close to him.
I just hid my face in his neck, "can we just put the notebook on..." I mumble into his shoulder. I hear him chuckle but he does it anyway. Eventually, I fell asleep in his arms.
*****
I woke up at 1 am thinking about the letter, I think I was also thinking about Luke and university and the marks I would get from the exams. Most of all I was wondering what mum would have thought of Luke. He was definitely all the things mum had said, the way he is with me, the fact we're like best friends, everything. because I couldn't sleep and I didn't want to wake Luke I got up and went down to the kitchen, sitting on the counter and re-reading the letter again.
"What are you doing up?" I hear Luke mumble as he shuffles in the door to the kitchen.
I shrug, "couldn't sleep... sorry if I woke you, I'm just re-reading my mum's letter..." I say as I loook up at him from the piece of paper.
"Ohh... want me to leave you to it? I can just get some water and disappear..."
"No, you can stay... I'm just thinking," I smile slightly.
"Wanna talk about it?"
"Not really."
"Ok," he says leaning on the counter opposite me as he boils the kettle.
A moment passes by and all we can hear is the kettle and the piece of paper shaking in my hand. "D-do you wanna read it?" I mumble, I'm not sure why, I never let anyone read the letters. I think I felt that mum would have liked Luke and luke would appreciate knowing what I'm thinking without me telling him.
"Are you sure...?"
I nodded, passing him the letter before I change my mind.
He looks at me with a look that's studying my every move as if he's triple checking that it is ok, before taking the letter from me.
Luke pov
I didn't know why she wanted me to read the letter, it was very much her thing and I didn't want to get in the way of that. As soon as I had finished reading it I understood. She wanted me to see what her mum wanted for her.
When I finish it I just give her a big hug and stay quiet because I don't know what the right thing to say is.
"You're the best..." she mumbles melting into the hug and holding me close, "I know I don't say it enough but I wouldn't have gotten through today without you," I just let her talk not wanting to get in the way of her thoughts, "I don't know what I would do without you if I do go to England..."
She pauses for a while before looking up at me and sighing. It breaks my heart looking at her when she is like this, her eyes are puffy, and I can now tell this is what's been bothering her most today.
"Well, I think we both know that I can't stop you from living your life, but if you do go I'll be on the end of the phone whenever you need me. I can wait for you to come back, we will cope..." I say holding her close.
She looks up at me pulling me down for a kiss, "I love you Luke..." she says smiling up at me.
"Love you too Olivia" it was all true, I didn't know what I would do without her, I know we had a rocky start but we are in such a strong place now.
A/N- I think that this will be the last chapter before the sequel, I think it ends on a good note I might to a epilogue just to round it off if you don't want to read the sequel (but its going to be epic so please read it)
