"Hi, (Y/N)! How is your paw today?"
You looked up from the mouse you were eating to see Brightheart, your close friend and long-time crush. You smiled sheepishly, swallowing your last mouthful. "It feels better," You replied, standing up as proof. "Cinderpelt says I can hunt again." An idea suddenly popped into your head. "Speaking of which, I've been looking for a hunting partner all morning. Do you want to go with me?"
Brightheart's smile faltered slightly, and she looked at the ground insecurely. "I'm... Not sure I'll be much help," She meowed quietly, casting a quick glance around to make sure no one was listening. "I can't see everything around me, and sometimes I bump into things." Your heart broke a little. Ever since her accident, she hadn't been herself. It worried you deeply, since it had been moons since the dogs had attacked.
You smiled reassuringly at her. "You'll be fine, Brightheart. There's no other cat in the whole forest I would rather go hunting with."
She looked up at you, her one blue eye sparkling with tears. "Really?" She sniffed, wiping her eye with a paw.
"Yeah," You purred. "I mean it."
She perked up slightly, her signature grin spreading across her muzzle. "Okay. Let's go!" You chuckled, giving her a gentle nudge with your shoulder as you began walking towards the camp entrance. Her happiness was contagious when she showed it.
The warm morning sun cast gorgeous rays of gold across the forest floor, and birds sang softly in the trees above. You couldn't think of a better way to spend your day. "I can't believe the forest looks so pretty!" Brightheart breathed, stopping to take everything in. "I feel so lucky to be in ThunderClan."
You smiled. "Me too. There's nothing better than the forest in greenleaf." You let your gaze wander over every tree and flower, drinking in their bright colors and smells. Your gaze landed on Brightheart, who was now crouched low to the ground, intensely focused on something in front of her.
She's the prettiest she-cat to ever exist, You thought dreamily as you watched the sun dance on her sleek pelt. If only I was good-looking enough for her. She sprang forward, pinning a fat squirrel to the ground before dispatching it with a swift bite to the neck. You felt a little sad suddenly. I'll never be enough for her.
She trotted back over to you with a wide smile, the squirrel gripped in her jaws. "I thought for sure it would get away," She laughed, dropping the small creature and scraping some leaves over it. "It was so close to that tree!" You continued to stare at her face, covered with so many imperfections, but absolutely perfect to you. Your ears began to heat up, and you shuffled your paws and adjusted your hind legs in a pained sort of way. Your mind began to wander, and you found yourself desperately wanting to tell her how you felt, but you couldn't. There was no way she would feel the same.
"(Y/N)? What's wrong?" Brightheart asked in a concerned voice, her blue eye looking you over intensely.
You blinked several times, shaking your head firmly. Mouse-brain! Now she thinks you're crazy! "O-oh, it's nothing. I was just thinking about, uh..." You couldn't come up with a reliable excuse for your distance.
"(Y/N)," Brightheart repeated, softer this time. "I know you better than that. I can tell something's bothering you. What is it?"
You sighed. It was now or never."Brightheart, I know you love Cloudtail, but I can't keep my eyes off of you! You're just so beautiful, and it drives me crazy. Every time I look at you, everything in my life just gets a hundred times better." She just stared at you, I'm unreadable expression on her face. You sighed painfully. "I'm sorry I opened my muzzle. I'll leave you alone." But just as you were about to leave, she stepped in front of you. You stared down at her, trying to read her expression. It was a combination of surprise and compassion.
"(Y/N), I don't love Cloudtail!" She protested with a laugh. "Me and Cloudtail are friends, but that's all we'll ever be. There's only one cat I love, and..." She looked away, her nose turning a dark shade of red. "Well, he's standing right in front of me. (Y/N), I... I love you, too. I just never thought you loved me back." Your heart fluttered wildly in your chest, and you stifled a joyous yowl. The she-cat you had loved since you were an apprentice was in love with you, as well. It almost felt like a dream.
"I can't believe this," You laughed, tears brimming in your eyes. "You love me back. I... Oh, Brightheart, I could just cry!" She laughed, a tear escaping her eye. She pressed herself against your broad chest, purring loudly and licking your fur. "Let's stay out here today," You whispered, gently lapping her ears. "I think we could have a lot of fun."
She smiled, leaning against your shoulder. "There's nothing else I would rather do, (Y/N)." You felt like the luckiest tom in the forest. You had a great home, you were in the best clan there ever was, and now you had a beautiful mate to make it all complete.
Life is good, You thought happily as you and Brightheart padded side-by-side. I don't think it could get any better.
