You sat in the soft grass, staring down at a small patch of disturbed earth topped with two white wildflowers. You never thought that this would happen to you. You always thought things this horrible only happened in nursery tales, but not to you. You still hadn't come to full terms with the situation yet, so you hadn't quite began to grieve properly.
"You were my whole world," You meowed, struggling to keep your voice from trembling.
"I don't know what to do without you..."
Your daughters, Cherrykit and Peachkit, had fallen gravely ill with greencough just days before their apprentice ceremony and passed away in their sleep. It was the most unfair thing StarClan had done to you since your mate died. They were so excited to become apprentices. Cherrykit had been talking about how she was going to be leader one day, and Peachkit wanted to be a medicine cat more than anything else.
"Such beautiful little souls," You whispered, gently resting your paw on top of the freshly-disturbed earth. "I'm so proud of you both."
Suddenly, a paw rested on your shoulder.
You turned your head to see your best friend, Honeyfern, standing behind you, her blue eyes glistening with sorrow in the evening light.
You thought you saw several tears floating in them, but you couldn't be sure.

"I don't even know what to say," Honeyfern murmured, sitting down beside you and gazing down at the grave. "They were such wonderful kits."
You sighed, finally allowing some of your pain to escape. Honeyfern was the only cat you truly trusted with this side of you, and you knew she wouldn't let you down.

"It hurts so much, Honeyfern. I..." You trailed off, choking back a sob.
Honeyfern noticed your struggle and moved closer to you, pressing herself to your side and twining her tail with yours.
You began to cry, allowing your shoulders to slump and your head to fall far below them as your true feelings finally came crashing down on top of you.
"I just want them back..."

Honeyfern sighed, using her chin to embrace your neck as you sobbed into her fur.
"I know, sweetheart," She whispered. "I know."
You continued to cry, your tears dampening the fur on Honeyfern's chest. She didn't protest, however, just held on to you tighter and rasped her tongue over your ears.
The ache in your chest seemed to worsen, giving you an even better reason to cry as hard as you could.
Honeyfern sighed sadly against your head, wrapping her tail around you and pulling you even closer to her.
"Let it out," She whispered. "It's okay to cry."
You buried your face as deep as you possibly could into her fur, your cries increasing to agonized moans.
Honeyfern simply held on to you, resting her paw on top of yours and tightly twining your tails together.

"I love them so much," You choked out. "They're my whole world, Honeyfern... What am I supposed to do without them...?"

"They will always be with you, (Y/N)," Honeyfern murmured, allowing her chin to rest comfortably on your head. "and so will I. Through the good times and the bad, I will never leave your side."
It was at that moment you could've sworn you felt Peachkit and Cherrykit sitting on either side of you, pressed against your flank in a gesture of reassurance and comfort. It was a surreal feeling.

"I hope they get everything they've ever wanted in StarClan," You breathed, turning your gaze up to the evening sky where the first stars of Silverpelt were beginning to glitter. "They deserve everything good."

Honeyfern purred softly, touching her nose to your tear-stained cheek. "They do, and they will."
You stared at the night sky for a moment longer, and suddenly, your kits seemed so far away. You sighed, allowing your gaze to fall back to your paws.

Honeyfern watched you for a moment, then scooted over so her flank was pressed against yours.
"You'll see them again, (Y/N). I promise."
You just closed your eyes and leaned into your best friend's embrace, breathing in her familiar scent. It was going to be hard, but you knew that you wouldn't be alone, because Honeyfern would always be by your side.

"Thank you," You whispered. "I don't know what I would do without you, Honeyfern."

Honeyfern smiled, holding you just a little tighter.
"Same to you, (Y/N)."
It wasn't everyday a cat found another that made their life so much more special, if they ever found that someone at all. You considered yourself the luckiest cat in the whole forest, even through all your trials and misfortunes.
Thank you, StarClan, You meowed silently, opening your eyes again to look at the stars.
Thank you for giving me such a wonderful friend.
