You groaned, forcing your eyelids to open against the blinding light.
You couldn't remember much of the previous day, only small fragments. However, you did remember chasing a rabbit, then the ground suddenly gave away under your paws and you were tumbling down a sheer ledge dotted with rocks and other debris. Your best friend, Whitestorm, had been with you, and you could vaguely remember his yowl of fear as you finally hit the ground far below.
You struggled to sit up, your flanks clenching painfully around your ribs. Everything hurt, especially your right shoulder.
You coughed, the bitter taste of blood spreading through your mouth.
"Wh-White...Whitestorm?" You croaked, suddenly aware of how painfully dry your throat was.
No one answered your weak call, so you collapsed back into the moss with a sound somewhere between a wheeze and a groan.
Has he forgotten about me? You wondered in a daze, staring through blurry vision at the fern tunnel that concealed the medicine den.
You sighed sadly, allowing your eyes to flicker closed.
Maybe I'm not that important to him.
You fell back into a light sleep, far too sore to get any kind of proper rest. You opened your eyes a crack once in awhile to see if anyone had come looking for you, but no one — not even Whitestorm — was ever there. You had begun to give up hope when you were roused by the sound of pawsteps and rustling ferns.
Slowly opening your eyes, you saw a familiar snow-white pelt standing in front of the dark green ferns, creating an awe-inspiring contrast.
A pair of gentle amber eyes gazed down at you, unaware that you were conscious.
You smiled weakly, far too sore to move.
"Whitestorm...""(Y/N)!" The white warrior breathed, his amber eyes lighting up like stars.
"You're okay!"
He padded across the mossy ground, crouching down to your level and gently nuzzling your cheek. You giggled, your ears heating up. Every worry you once had over him not caring about you vanished like mist.
He stepped back after a moment, his gaze traveling over your crippled form.
"Yellowfang said the fall broke your tail. How does it feel?"
You blinked, genuinely surprised. You had never heard of a cat breaking their tail, but you supposed it wasn't outside the realm of possibility.
Concentrating, you strained the muscles in your tail in an attempt to move it, only to come to the painful realization that Yellowfang had been correct— You had indeed broken your tail."It hurts," You admitted in a soft wheeze, struggling to speak through your bruised lungs.
"but my shoulder hurts the worst. Did Yellowfang say anything about that?"
Whitestorm blinked, then turned his gaze upward as he searched his mind."She didn't say anything else was broken," He concluded after a moment. "just your tail. You probably hit it really hard."
You snorted, rolling your eyes.
"You don't say."
Whitestorm laughed, his comfortingly familiar voice echoing through the fern hollow.
You huffed, averting your gaze, although not out of spite."Same old (Y/N). Always such a smart-ears."
His expression softened slightly, and he looked away and flattened his ears.
"I, um... I brought you something. May I... Give it to you?"
You were rather taken aback by the obvious darkening of his nose's color. You always knew Whitestorm as a calm, level-headed tom who rarely let his emotions get the better of him.
But now, as you lay injured and defenseless in his presence, you got to know the side of him that no one else ever saw."Of course," You meowed quietly, slowly propping yourself up on your forelegs.
"unless you don't want to."He blinked, taking a deep breath. "No, no, I want you to have it. I just..." He trailed off, sighing. You tilted your head off to one side, slightly concerned. Your friend wasn't being himself whatsoever.
"Here," He meowed, nudging something toward you with a paw. "just take it."
You turned your gaze down to his paw, and your heart fluttered in your chest.
Whitestorm had brought you a rose."It's beautiful," You whispered, tears brimming in the corners of your eyes. "Oh, Whitestorm, thank you..."
The white tom chuckled, flattening his ears in a flustered way.
"I'm glad you like it, and I'm glad you're okay, (Y/N)."You smiled, carefully outstretching your paw to touch his. "You're the best friend anyone could ask for," You purred. "Of course I love it."
Whitestorm smiled and opened his jaws to say something, but before he could, the fern tunnel parted and a familiar dark gray she-cat stepped into the hollow with an irritated huff."Hello, Yellowfang," Whitestorm meowed, clearly trying to keep his cool. "Nice day here in Thunder—"
"You're disturbing my patient," She retorted, glaring at the senior warrior. "(Y/N) has suffered a very traumatic injury, and she needs to rest. If you're not out of my den in one minute, I'll claw off your ears!" Then, she turned and disappeared back into the lush ferns.
You bit your lip, desperately stifling a burst of laughter. Whitestorm appeared to be doing the same, because his cheeks were puffed out and a snorting sound was rumbling from his nose."I'll be back tomorrow, alright?" He promised, gently resting his gaze on you. "Get some rest."
You smiled. "Okay. Goodnight, Whitestorm."
He purred, then, much to your surprise, he leaned down and placed a soft lick on your cheek before padding after Yellowfang.
You stared after him for a moment, your jaw hanging open. You were certain you had never been this flustered in your entire life.
You looked back down at the rose he had left you, and a smile spread across your face.
What a cheeky fox. You purred silently as you gently grasped the flower under your paw and rested your head.
What would I do without him?
Then, you fell asleep with the rose tucked into the moss next to you.****
