⚠️ Warnings ⚠️
• Some angst

You were awoken from your deep slumber by the sounds of distress coming from the clearing outside. Concerned, you raised your head and listened intently for a moment to see if you had dreamed of the crying or not. Sure enough the sounds came again, but slightly louder this time. You rose to your paws as silently as you possibly could and crept over a sleeping Cloverfoot and finally emerged into the moon-bathed clearing that was completely still, say for one familiar cat who was crouched beneath the base of a hollowed-out oak. You sighed sympathetically, making your way over to the broken tom. "Shadowsight?" You murmured, being careful not to startle him. The young medicine cat slowly raised his eyes to meet your gaze, and when he did, you could see the lack of sleep and frustration there.

"I can't take this anymore (Y/N)," He murmured weakly, his shoulders slumping like a dead badger. "I never thought my life would turn out this way. Sometimes..." He paused, taking a deep breath and shuffling his paws. "Sometimes I wish I was never born. I'm starting to think everyone would be better off without me." You felt a few of your heartstrings snap painfully at Shadowsight's despair-filled statement. Your friend had always had a way of being hard on himself, but you'd never seen it this bad before.

"Shadowsight, don't say those things... Mothwing is a complete mouse-brain and she shouldn't even be here. You can't let that fish-face make you feel this way. She's the worthless mousefodder, not you!" Shadowsight blinked, his green eyes filled with tears.

"You heard what Puddleshine said, (Y/N). I can't be trusted. That's why I've been made a prisoner in my own clan. Do you have any idea what that's like?" His tone held a slight note of defensiveness, but you didn't take it personally. You would be acting the same way if you were in his position.

"Puddleshine is a mouse-brain, too!" You retorted, your voice louder than you had intended. "If he thinks he can just push a full medicine cat down like this —one he mentored— because some RiverClan wretch told him to, he has bees in his brain! You're an amazing medicine cat, Shadowsight. The forest would be lost without you. I would be lost without you!" The dark gray tom stiffened, his eyes widening in surprise.

"You... You really mean that, (Y/N)? Even after...?"

"Yes, Shadowsight. Even after Ashfur killed my sister. I couldn't imagine my life without you in it. Who would treat my cuts with just the right amount of marigold? Who would sneak me extra prey? Who would come curl up next to me when I'm having a bad dream? No one else in this entire forest would do that, Shadowsight! You're an absolutely wonderful cat, and that's all that matters." You took a deep breath, forcing your fur to lay flat. "I wouldn't trade you for all the prey in the forest, Shadowsight. I... I love you." The young medicine cat blinked at you, several stray tears falling from his eyes. You moved forward and gently embraced him, stroking your tongue across his ears.

"What would I do without you?" He murmured into your fur. You smiled and chuckled softly before releasing your hold on him.

"Lots of things, probably. But what's important is that we stick by each other's sides and look out for each other. Isn't that what friends do?" Shadowsight smiled, and you thought you saw his nose become dusted with a darker shade of pink.

"Thanks, (Y/N). I love you, too." You both sat in the clearing for awhile after that, just enjoying each other's presence and gazing at the stars until Shadowsight yawned and rose to his paws.

"It's getting late. I should probably go back to the tree before anyone sees I'm out here." Once again your heart ached for him, and you wanted nothing more than to stay by his side. Suddenly, you got an idea.

"I'll go with you," You declared, standing tall like the first cat to ever conquer a territory. "I don't give two rats' tails what Puddleshine or Mothwing say. You're more important right now." Shadowsight stared at you for just a moment, as if contemplating all the risks and repercussions. Finally he smiled, nodding his head toward his makeshift den.

"After you, my dear. She-cats first." You giggled at his sweet remark, padding softly past him and into the hollow tree. He joined you a moment later, curling up next to you and closing his eyes. "Goodnight (Y/N)," He murmured sleepily. "I love you." You smiled, leaning down and gently touching your nose to his ear.

"I love you too, Shadowsight. Sleep well." Once he began to snore quietly, you settled down beside him and allowed your own eyes to close. You could lose everything you'd worked for tomorrow, and you would be just fine. As long as Shadowsight was with you, anywhere could be your home. He's kind, smart, and brave, You thought wistfully as you drifted away. That's what really matters to me.

Words cannot express my distaste towards Mothwing, Puddleshine, and Lionblaze >:( Shocking, considering they were three of my favorite characters before this arc.

I know cats don't have tear ducts. Please don't bring it up
