Everything had been just fine. You had the forest at your paws with a promising future as a young warrior of ThunderClan, never failing to impress your clanmates with your flawless agility while hunting and unwavering strength in battle. Everything had been just fine, and suddenly it wasn't.

You strode out in front of the patrol, your head held high as you scanned the bright forest around you. It was just a little past dawn, and you had been chosen by Brambleclaw to join the first hunting patrol of the day along with Spiderleg, Lionblaze, and Rosepetal.

"Who made you patrol leader?" An amused purr rose up beside you, and you glanced over to your right to see Rosepetal trailing beside you and giving you a teasing look, her bright blue eyes glistening in the morning sunlight.

You smirked sheepishly, slowing down just enough to let your clanmates catch up to you. "Sorry," You chuckled. "I guess I'm a little excited to be on patrol."

"Well, I'm not surprised," Rosepetal meowed, turning to look at the warm sunshine that dappled the canopy of green leaves above. "It's a beautiful day to hunt."

"Beautiful?" Spiderleg echoed, casting Rosepetal a sour glare as if her optimistic observation made him nauseous. "It's early, is what it is. What is it with she-cats and morning patrols?"

"You know, it wouldn't kill you to try and be pleasant for a change, Spiderleg," You shot back before Rosepetal could reply. "What is it with you and always being grumpy?"

"Don't try to reprimand me," The skinny black-and-brown tom retorted, his fur bristling defensively. "You'd be grumpy too if you had kits jumping on you and stepping on your face before the sun was even out!"

You sighed, rolling your eyes. It was typical of Spiderleg to go off on tangents about his kits and Daisy, and most of the time, you let your mind wander and tuned him out.

"You are so negative!" Rosepetal snapped, rounding on Spiderleg with a lash of her tail. "You have no respect for your clanmates, you lay around as much as you possibly can, and you complain about everything! What kind of warrior behaves that way?"

Spiderleg curled his lips back, revealing his teeth. "Watch your mouth, she-cat."

"That's enough," Lionblaze growled, thrusting himself between the bickering warriors. "If either of you had any respect for the warrior code. . ." The golden tabby began firmly scolding your denmates, but you had stopped listening. Instead, you were intently eyeing a plump squirrel perched on the root of a large oak, nibbling on an acorn and blissfully unaware of your presence. You must have feathers in your ears if you can't hear Spiderleg yowling.

You dropped into a hunter's crouch and began slowly stalking forward, your paws gliding soundlessly over the damp grass. The squirrel continued to nibble on the acorn, pausing and casting a wary glance around.
