THERE IS ALWAYS A CERTAIN aspect of the world that is always kept a mystery. To the members of the Glade though, the proportions of hidden details about the world greatened immensely and tettered over the edge of inhumane captivity. Eden, however, knew a little more than most. In the scientific sense anyway.
Ever since she arrived in the Glade, a completely barren area of land enclosed in four deeply frightening stone walls, she had spent most of her waking time trying to figure out what on earth was going on with the world. Eden had one thing that the other boys -who arrived periodically every month - did not have, some remnants of her memories. Now, it wasn't enough to form a coherent story about the world on the outside yet she did have enough knowledge to cultivate a myriad of different concoctions in the place that she called her second home -the lab. The lab was the second building to be built in the extremely early days of the Glade, after the main shelter of course. And even after three years had passed, the majority of the original structure still incased the many tables; glass wear, washing up basins, thousands of syringes, various bottles of chemicals and her holy grail (the microscope.) Eden studied the blood mostly and often the venom of the grievers, in order to come up with some sort of knowledge about the beasts that were the main threat to their lives.
But I digress.

EDEN WOKE AT THE CRACK OF DAWN, due to an all-familiar pounding on the door of her hut that was on the opposite side to where the others slept for her comfort alone. She, with sleep still hanging her eyes closed, pulled the limp pillow from underneath her head and squished it around her ears in an attempt to catch any further signs of sleep she could muster. "Eden!" Alby yelled through the door, only knowing harder as time increased. "You better not be going back to sleep!"
"How can I with you creating such a racket that I can feel the vibrations in my skull!" she yelled back, groaning loudly as she lifted the pillow from her head. Eden sat up in bed, pulling her bed shirt back up her shoulders as it had slipped in the night. She yawned softly, rubbing her eyes as she walked over the small space of her bedroom to unlock the door that Alby pounded on only moments before.
"You'd think after all these years you'd be used to the early mornings," Alby chuckled, taking in her usual dishevelled state. The thick dark hair that usually lay halfway down her back was instead pulled up into a lopsided french plait with half of the hair hanging out of it and around her face. Her opal eyes almost dulled to grey with the effects of sleep depravity and the stress that was constantly pressed onto her shoulders like a stubborn pimple.
She sighed deeply, fighting the urge to yawn once more. "You know Alby... When I made you my second in command I didn't expect you to be so vigilant with the timings. Could you not... mh, I don't know. Have a break now and then?"
Alby chuckled softly, glancing down to the floor as he shook his head, "Come on Eden, business awaits."
"Fine," she huffed, odd accent that she did not know the origin of showing strongly. Her grip on the side of her door got tighter as a victorious grin grew on Alby's face. "No breakfast for you."
"Hey!" he exclaimed in outrage as she closed the door again. From then, Eden quickly changed into clothes that could actually see the light of the Glade without her evaporating into embarrassment - she didn't care about Alby seeing them though, given she had known him for the longest and experienced such terror with him - before fixing her hair into something that looked somewhat professional. Then, she walked out of her bedroom and closed the door behind her.
Alby and Eden spent the first hour of the day with the keepers of each job around the Glade, giving the usual instructions and chatting about problems that they were each facing. She made a note of each of these concerns in her overfilled notebook, which always lived in her back pocket, and promised to figure out a way to fix or help with them.
