"Mum? What on earth are you doing here?" Kai opened their dorm room door to be very surprised by the person standing behind it.
"Hi sweetheart" she ignored the question and walked into their dorm.
Kai stood by the door for a moment completely gobsmacked.
"What? Your poor old mum cant come and visit without asking to?" Kai shut the door before walking over to their bed where their mum was sat.
"No you can, it's just not like you to not call first" they still had one week left of summer break so kai didn't need to attend to any classes.
The door opened again to this time reveal Ashley, Tom and Amelia.
"Miss Bartley" Tom nodded at the woman before jumping onto his bed, legs crossed facing the older woman.
"Tom" she smiled at the young boy before paying her attention on Amelia.
"Amelia darling" She opened her arms for the younger girl who willingly accepted.
"Hi baby" Amelia kissed Kai's cheek before sitting next to them on their bed.
"And you're... Ashley correct?" She asked.
"That's me, pleasure to meet you again" the woman shook her head.
"Pleasures all mine sweetheart" Tom perked up suddenly causing Amelia to jump.
"It's so hot outside!" Tom pointed to their window.
"It's very hot today" Kai's mum replied.
"Should we go out?" Kai asked glancing over to their mum.
"I would love to" Amelia stood before making a move to leave the dorm.
"Ames" Amelia turned around when she heard the nickname kai would use for her.
"Where are you going?" They asked.
"I need to change into something cooler" they nodded in understanding before the brunette smiled and left their dorm.
"How are you two?" The older woman whispered as she nudged Kai's arms lightly.
"We're really good actually" kai remembered that they told Amelia they loved her before they fell asleep the previous week, and she hadn't brought it up or said it back since.
"I told her I love her" the woman's eyes widened in surprise.
"You did?" Kai nodded a sad smile on their face.
"Why the frown?" She asked sensing their was more to the story.
"She didn't say it back, well, I fell asleep after I said it" Kai's mum nodded their head before speaking again.
"Speak to her about it" Kai had wanted to, they were just scared of how the conversation would go.
"I want to"
"Then you should" Kai smiled.
"You only live once, take every chance you can to do what makes you happy kai" She placed her hand on their knee.
"Ok" they willed the tears that threatened to fall from their eyes to go away.
Amelia returned as she shut the door behind her and sat next to kai on their bed.
"Are you ok?" Amelia asked as she noticed Kai's eyes looking watery.
"I'm fine" they replied.
"Let's go" Ashley spoke standing from Toms bed.
