"Hi sweetheart" Amelia smiled as she walked through the doors of Kai's mums hospital room.

"Hi" she replied before sitting next to kai by the side of the bed.

"How are you?" She asked coughing slightly as she sat up in bed.

"I'm good, I think I should be asking you that question" the older woman laughed in response before coughing again.

"I feel like shit" Kai rested their hand on top of hers.

"It's a sign that your bodies shitting down" as painful as it was to admit that their mother was dying, they knew it was true, and knew it was happening.

"I know" she replied, nodding her head.

"I want you to take care of this one when I'm gone" Amelia smiled before placing her hand on Kai's knee.

"Always" Kai smiled at Amelia willing themselves not to cry.

"And take care of yourself sweetheart" Amelia nodded again.

"I will" Kai placed their hand on top of Amelia's that was resting on their knee before speaking.

"I'll make sure she's alright"

"Good"

Time passed as they spoke and laughed.

"We should go" Kai spoke as they stood from the chair as did Amelia.

"Thank you for stopping by" she spoke as Kai leant down to place a kiss to her cheek.

"Bye Amelia darling" Amelia leant down to envelope weak limbs in a short hug.

"Bye" she waved as they left the small hospital room.

Over the past month, it had been hard, heartbreaking and painful, and had gone very quickly.

Too quickly.

All of those factors came crashing down on Kai when they answered a phone call in the early hours of the morning.

Their heart ached and their mind raced.

They didn't have much time to think though, so ran from their position on the bed.

"Kai?" Amelia mumbled confused as to why Kai left their bed.

"I need to go" Amelia noticed Kai's panic and fear, so joined them.

She jumped from the bed and put any clothes she could find on.

She grabbed the Keys for the room and hurried from their dorm room.

They both ran to the car before getting inside the vehicle.

Kai drove carefully, but also in a rushed manner.

When they arrived at the hospital kai parked the car and jumped from the vehicle before running towards the hospital.

Amelia was behind them following every step they took.

"I'm here for Miss Bartley" Kai breathed, their breathing uneven and laboured as they spoke to the receptionist.

The nurse explained where to find her as they had moved her room.

Kai nodded and thanked the nurse before running towards the elevator.

It all felt blurry for Kai, it didn't feel real.

Kai almost broke down when they saw the many doctors and nurses displaying the small hospital room.

They heard the numerous calls throughout the room.

"Charge" they saw the yellow paddles attached to their mothers chest as she rose from the mattress.

"Charge" Kai stood with Amelia by their side, the brunette placing her hand within Kai's.

The doctors stood around for a moment all shaking their heads and whispering.

"Time of death, 2:24am" they turned around to see Kai and Amelia stood staring at the scene.

Kai saw doctor Bailey within the crowd of white lashed doctors, she shook her head and mouthed an "I'm sorry" to the child of the woman she had just lost.

Kai's eyes filled with tears as they stared motionless at their mothers lifeless figure on the bed.

Every doctor slowly dispersed from the room, leaving just Amelia and Kai.

Amelia stood with her hand covering her mouth to try and muffle she quiet sobs that are threatening to escape.

She had to be strong for Kai.

"Baby" she watched as Kai walked over to their mothers position on the bed.

They pulled a chair so they were sat by her bedside, much like all those times they had visited her.

She didn't look the same to kai, her head was shaven, and her face looked exhausted.

They placed their hand against the skin of her head, laughing at the memory of their conversation about her being bald.

The laugh was mixed within tears.

"I love you mum" their heart ached and their throat burned.

"So much" their whispering tearful words were silenced with a sob consumed with aching grief.

They rested their head against the mattress and clutched onto their mothers hands.

Fragile, cold hands.

They relieved the tears that had been held in for so long.

Amelia stood and watched as Kai fully let go, let go of it all: the pain, the heartbreak, the grief.

Amelia moved from her position by the door so she stood by their side, her hands resting against their shoulders.

"It's alright" they turned from their mothers embrace and allowed Amelia to wrapped her arms around them and to fully let go.

"I've got you" she whispered.

The cries soon subsided; the room falling silent.

"Hey, let's go home" Amelia pried Kai from her chest and encouraged them to leave the hospital.

Kai stole one last glance at their mother before allowing Amelia to lead them from the hospital.

Kai was in no state to drive so Amelia drove back to the college.

Kai was buried in grief, but somewhere within they felt relieved.

Relieved she wasn't in pain anymore.

She could rest.
