Overdose

Kai was distracted.

They had received a message from their mother notifying them that she would be coming to their college dorm for an hour to catch up with them.

"What's the focused face for Bartley?" Amelia teased as she sat on the bed next to them.

"My mums coming to the dorm" Amelias smile almost tore her face in half when she heard the good news.

"That woman loves me" Amelia turned to Ashley and Tom making them both laugh.

"Hmm me more though" Kai teased.

"No way" Amelia shook her head.

"My baby" Kai's mum was at the door her arms wrapped around Kai's neck pulling them close.

"You've grown" she looked Kai up and down smiling proud at what she'd created.

"Amelia sweetheart come here" Amelia almost ran to Kai's mother.

She held on tightly to the older woman never wanting to let go.

"I need air darling" she laughed and pulled away from Amelia.

"Sorry"

"I haven't met you before" she pointed to both Ashley and Tom who waved in response.

"I'm a big fan of your work Miss Bartley" Tom stood and held his hand out for the woman to accept, which she did.

"A fan of mine?" She asked smiling at the young boy.

"A big fan ma'am"

"Nice to meet you too dear" she took Ashley's hand smiling at the girl.

"A pleasure to meet you too" Kai sat on their bed next to Amelia.

They spoke about their mother's time in Africa and her adventures.

"Guys you have to see this Mark's in a fight with Jackson" Owen poked his head through the door before dashing off again.

Ashley Amelia and Tom ran after Owen to watch the fight.

"You seem happier here" their mother spoke.

"Dad's a piece of shit, anywhere is better if he's not there" she nodded her head agreeing with Kai.

"Yes your father is a piece of work" she placed her hand on Kai's cheek and examined the skin.

"He hasn't hit you recently?" She asked.

"Nope last time was last week" Kai smiled a half smile.

"I'm glad, remember you know who to call if it's too bad" Kai nodded.

"How is Amelia really doing?" She asked knowing the girl struggled with her addictions.

"She's hooked on everything again" Kai sighed, they were really proud of her when she had managed to stop drinking and taking drugs for two weeks she was doing so well.

The smallest thing made her go back to it all.

"I'm not angry at her I'm just concerned" the older woman ran her hand through their hair and nodded her head.

"I know sweetheart"

"Have you told her yet?" She asked, her smile teasing them.

"Ugh what is it with everyone and that topic" they groaned hiding their face in their hands.

"Listen, that girl definitely feels the same way for you. I'm telling you now Kai. The way she looks at you, the way she acts around you, the way she talks about you, she's fallen for my baby, and she's a lucky girl. You're lucky to have her as well, she isn't easy to find. Be there with her, for her, just live your best life" Kai listened to their mother's words nodding along with her.

"Thanks mum"

After Kai's first and last class of the day they went back to the dorm to find no one was there.

There was an odd feeling to the atmosphere however, so they had a wander around the dorm. What they saw in the bathroom stopped their heart.

Amelia was on the floor surrounded by medication all sorts of different types.

"Fuck" Kai leant down to check her pulse.

"Oh thank fuck" Kai ran to grab their phone and called for an ambulance.

"How long has she been out for?" The paramedic asked as they wheeled her off the ambulance and into the hospital

"I'm not sure she was out when I found her" they nodded and took amelia into a draped area.

They pulled the curtains and suddenly Amelia was gone.

The ringing in their ears had increased since the sirens made an entrance. They called the one person Amelia would want to know about her safety.

"Hey Derek, yeah she's ok she's being examined now, I think I found her in time" Derek spoke way too fast but Kai didn't bother to stop him or slow him down.

"I'll see You soon"

Kai ended the phone call when they saw a doctor make their way over to them.

"You're here for Amelia?" He asked.

"Yes" swallowing was difficult due to the lump that was threatening to close their entire throat up.

"She relapsed, she took medication that don't mix well together and as a result her body shut down, she overdosed" Kai nodded along with the doctor whilst he explained.

"She'll be ok but we want to keep her over night to make sure everything is definitely ok. Do you know why she might have done this?" He asked allowing Kai to speak.

"She's been on and off with drugs but she seemed like she was in a good place I wasn't expecting this at all" the man placed a comforting hand on Kai's shoulder.

"We will be working very hard on your friend" he smiled at them before walking away.

"Derek hey" Kai saw the boy make his way towards them.

"Kai hey" he didn't hug them because he knew their history.

"How is she? Have you heard anything?" Derek asked wanting to know if his sister was ok.

"The doctor said that she overdosed and relapsed. She'll be fine they just need her in for the night to be sure she's alright" Derek let out a breath he didn't realise he was holding when Kai explained his sisters condition.

"I'll stay with her tonight" Derek shook his head.

"Derek honestly it's alright I'll stay with her" Dereks rested his head in his hands.

"Thank you" they ran their hands across his back attempting to comfort who they saw as an older brother.

Kai was allowed to sit in with Amelia through the night and was given a bed so they weren't on the sofa for the whole night.

"Goodnight Ames" they placed a kiss to Amelias forehead before turning the lights off.
