Amelia knew about Kai's mother having stage 2 lung cancer, they had told her after the hours of tears they had cried.

She couldn't help but cry as well when she saw Kai for the very first time cry the most tears she's ever seen them cry.

As well as the thought of the mother she wasn't born from but had a closer bond with than her own mum, was suffering from a cancer that killed thousands.

Kai awoke from their slumber in the middle of the day, which for them wasn't something that happened.

Their eyes burnt and their heart ached.

"Morning mate" Tom was laying on his bed across from kai; Tom heard about Kai's mum but decided not to mention it.

"Morning" they groaned before rolling over onto their side facing the wall.

They lay facing the wall, their eyes burning a hole into it.

"Amelia's just gone to get some breakfast" Tom said, knowing Kai must be wondering where the brunette is.

"Ok" they responded.

They cared for Amelia deeply but their mind wasn't in the right headspace right now, and all they wanted to do was to lay in bed and cry.

It took a lot to break Kai's hope, but when they imagined a world without their mum those walls were completely and immediately destroyed.

They understood that she could survive the surgery's and the cancer, but they knew the chances of this, especially at their mums age was slim to none.

The door opened signalling Amelia's arrival.

"Are they awake?" She whispered to Tom as he nodded his head.

"I'm awake" kai answered for her, as they rolled back over so they were facing away from the wall.

"I brought you some bagels: cream cheese, your favourite" Kai really didn't feel like eating right now, their stomach was filled with knots and the thought of food made them want to throw it back up again.

"I'm not hungry" Amelia smiled sadly at her partner before sitting at the end of Kai's bed.

"But thanks" they smiled at her so she knew they were greatful for the act.

"It's alright. Tom do you want these?" She asked as she held the bag out in front of her.

"Ooo yes!" Tom stood from their bed and snatched the brown bag from her hand.

"Thanks" he moved to his desk this time and turned his computer on.

"You can't stay in bed all day" Amelia spoke whilst looking at Kai.

"Why don't we go for a walk?" She offered watching as she shook her head.

"I don't want to" Amelia rested her hand against their arm.

"You can't stay here all day, it's not good for you" Kai knew this.

Kai didn't respond.

Amelia sighed before leaving their dorm room.

"Come on" Tom spoke, watching the scene unfold.

"What?"

"You have a beautiful, caring girlfriend that's trying to help you, I'm not trying to make you feel guilty but you need to try and do what's best for yourself and help Amelia out and get out of bed" Tom replied as they stood from their chair and held their hand out for Kai to take.

"Sounds like you're trying to make me feel guilty" kai mumbled.

"Come on" Tom waited for Kai to hold their hand.

"Fine" they groaned before holding Toms hand and lifting themselves from the mattress.

"Good. Now, get dressed and go over to Amelia's dorm and go for a walk" Tom walked back over to their chair and sat down.

Kai did as told and put some decent clothes on.

Kai knocked on Amelia's door not long later and awaited for it to answer.

"Hey" Owen answered the door.

"Looking for Amelia?" He already knew they were.

"She went to Ashley's" Kai nodded before thanking the boy and walking to Ashley's dorm.

They knocked again and awaited for a reply.

Ashley answered the door this time.

"Amelia, Kai's here!" Kai stood and waited for their girlfriend.

"Hi" she closed the door slightly as Ashley moved back into her dorm room.

"Can I take you up on the offer to go for a walk?" They asked, their eyes dropping to the floor as they waited for an answer.

Amelia smiled before responding.

"Of course" she interlocked her fingers with theirs causing them to advert their eye contact from the floor and to Amelia.

"Ashley I'm going for a walk with kai" she poked her head through the gap of the door before shutting after getting a wave in response from Ashley.

"Let's go"

Kai was now sat on their bed phone in hand as they spoke to their mum.

"Ok, i can come and wait for when it's finished?" They asked.

"No sweetheart, the surgery will make me exhausted"

"Ok" they replied.

"How have you been holding up?" She asked knowing the news has affected them.

"I'm ok" that was a lie and both of them new it.

"Just take care of yourself" Kai smiled.

"I'll speak to you tomorrow" she said before both saying their goodbyes and hanging up the phone.

They placed their phone on their desk before leaning back against their pillows and rested one arm under their head.

"Hey" Amelia whispered as she walked into the dark room of Kai's dorm.

Kai waved in response and watched as Amelia walked over to their single bed.

"Can i join you?" She asked as she stood to the side of the bed.

"You have to ask" Amelia smiled before joint them in the bed.

She lay between their legs and rested her chin above her heart so she could look up at them.

"You called your mum?" Amelia asked after a moment of contempt silence.

"Yes"

"She's ok?" They nodded their head.

"You'll be ok" Kai took a deep breath.

"She's a strong woman kai, but if she doesn't make it you will be ok" Kai swallowed the growing lump in their throat.

"When I lost my dad I thought the pain would stay with me forever" she placed her hand on their cheek and smiled at them.

"You have me: Tom, and Ashley" Kai nodded as they melted into Amelia's embrace.

Her hands were cold and it ironically welcomed them.

"If you help me I'll help you" Kai cocked a brow.

"How can I help you?" They asked.

"By letting me help you"
