2 months later

Kai was laying in their bed arms behind their head as their girlfriend rested against their bare chest.

Amelia pulled a packet of cigarettes from underneath the pillow as Kai passed her the lighter, Amelia sat up so she could light it.

Kai didn't like smoking, but they knew that for now it helped Amelia deal with not doing drugs.

That's all that mattered right now.

"Thanks" Amelia smiled at kai before placing the ciggerete between her lips.

"Good?" Amelia nodded.

"Yeah" Amelia rested her head against their chest again whilst she smoked.

"Cigarettes after sex is always amazing" Amelia sighed as Kai's hand migrated to soft pale skin.

"Always good" kai spoke laughing softly at their girlfriend.

****

"Shit I'm late" Amelia huffed as she jumped out of her bed In a rushed haze.

"What?" Kai asked as they watched Amelia scatter around her dorm room.

"I have my biology exam. I'm late!" Kai sprung from the bed and searched for clothes for Amelia to wear.

"Here" Kai threw their t-shirt at her.

"Thanks" Amelia quickly pulled the shirt over her head before pulling their trousers on as well, leaving them naked in bed.

"Goodluck!" Kai shouted as Amelia left her dorm.

****

"You look like hell" Kai spoke as they sat next to their mum in the hospital.

"Thanks" she replied, her voice was slightly hoarse.

"Being honest" Kai raised their hands in fake surrender.

"It's alright" she laughed, before coughing violently.

"Here" Kai passed her a plastic cup filled with water so she could take a sip.

"Thank you" Kai smiled before taking the cup from their mum and placing it back on the table.

"Miss Bartley, Kai, I hope I'm not interrupting" Doctor Bailey spoke as she flipped a piece of paper on her clipboard so she could read the woman's information.

"No, no, never" The smaller woman smiled in response before speaking again.

"I bring bad news" she frowned looking down at her chart.

"And good news?" The older woman asked hopefully.

"Only bad I'm afraid" Kai braised themselves before Dr Bailey spoke again.

"Go on" they both waited for the doctor to speak holding their breath.

"It seems that the cancer has spread more than we thought, all of your vital organs are at risk and the surgery we planned will only increase risk. Your body is slowly shutting down, if we did transplants there's no guarantee your new organs wouldn't fail too. It seems that you only have a month left until your body will shut down completely" Kai's face fell completely, their eyes stung and their heart ached.

They saw it coming, but it felt so different to actually living it from thinking about it.

"I'm very sorry" She glanced at kai and saw they were fighting off tears.

She offered a weak smile to Dr Bailey who smiled back before taking the hint and leaving.

"Kai" Kai didn't dare look at their mother, if they did they new they'd break down.

"No" they breathed.

"Kai" she pulled them into her so their head rested against her heart.

"It's alright, let it out" kai listened to her and cried until their lungs burnt.

****

"Are they alright?" Tom asked as they stood outside their dorm room.

"No I don't think so" Amelia shook her head as she pinched the bridge of her nose.

Amelia softly knocked on the door and received no response.

"Kai" Amelia said softly, they had locked the door to the dorm room.

"Baby" she placed her hand against the door and awaited a response.

Nothing.

"Maybe we should just leave them" Ashley suggested as she stood waiting for the door to open.

"I cant leave them now, they need me" Amelia softly knocked again, and this time heard the chain jingle before the door opened.

Amelia looked at Ashley and Tom who raised their eyebrows.

They all slowly walked in to see Kai under their sheets.

"Hey" Amelia whispered as she sat on the end of their bed.

No response.

"Kai" she whispered, watching as their eyes closed and a tear escaped from their swollen, bloodshot eyes.

"What?" They replied, their voice cracking as they spoke.

"I'm here" kai didn't mean to push Amelia away when they got upset, it was force of habit.

They sat up for a second before moving over on the bed so Amelia could lay next to them.

Tom and Ashley mouthed that they were going to Ashley's dorm before silently leaving.

"Come here" Amelia lay with her body facing them and her arms open.

Kai didn't hesitate and pushed themselves into Amelia's body.

Allowing the cold air consuming Amelia's body from outside surround them.

"You smell good" they mumbled.

Amelia smiled before attaching her hands to their hair.

"You always smell good" Amelia responded loving the way kai always smelt savoury and sweet.

"Mhm" they snuggled closer to their girlfriend.

"I'm sorry" Amelia spoke knowing that kai was upset because of their mum.

"Me too" they sighed.

"She'll want you to move on eventually" they nodded and smiled sadly.

"I know" Amelia continued to thread her fingers through their hair as they lay rested within her body.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Amelia asked knowing it would help kai to talk, but also knowing they didn't talk about their feelings.

"Not really, I just want to sleep" Amelia nodded.

"That's a good idea" she pulled the covers higher so they were both tucked underneath.

"Mhm" they closed their eyes, taking a deep breath at the relief of closing their eyes.

"I'm here if you need me" Amelia wasnt dressed and wasn't even very comfortable; as long as they were asleep and resting and safe then nothing else mattered.

"Goodnight kai"

"Goodnight"
