Chapter 18
Something had gone wrong in Ame. The kitsune knew it the moment she entered. Rain poured from the sky, thousands of liquid diamonds pelting the earth.
It was Konan's rain, she knew that, but why was she making it fall so heavily? It was unlike the kunoichi, usually she only made it sprinkle. At least all the times Yuna had come to the village.
The demon shook herself free of water, upon entering the structure that contained Konan's chakra. She'd never been in this building before.
"Konan! I'm back, Mah! Leader-sama?" She called out, walking past many columns. She'd learned in the past that even if she couldn't feel Pain, it didn't mean he wasn't there too. "Okaa-san?"
She turned the corner to find the most distressing of sights. There, in all her mourning glory, kneeled Konan. Her amber orbs were clouded with sadness, and the kyuubi hardly needed the look on her face to understand why.
The Ame-nin was at the edge of the floor, before it fell away to be a shallow pool. Instead of the water that once filled it, origami flowers, identical to the one Konan wore in her hair, filled the hole.
It the bed of flowers, looking as godly majestic as the day she'd met him, laid the body of Pain. Not far from him lay another body, the one she guessed to be Nagato, the original Pain.
The kyuubi crumbled to her knees, by the bluette, her gaze never leaving the two bodies. "Pain-sama...." She whispered, the two men looked so peaceful, just laying there in the bed of flowers.
"Konan, who did this to our family?" She felt the kunoichi's gaze on her, as though shocked she'd remained so calm. Yuna raised her emotionless gaze to the woman. "Who did this to Pain-sama?"
The elder-nin placed a hand on her shoulder. "Nagato. He decided to revive everyone the Pains had killed." She said softly. "We are no longer of the Akatsuki. We are of Amegakure, allies to Konoha."
The kyuubi had moved away immediately after hearing this. "What do you mean by that? Konoha is evil! They've killed everyone we've loved!" She snapped.
Konan rose to her feet, now acting as the calm one. "No Yuna. We were the evil. We lost sight of our goal, our dream, and only caused more pain and war."
"They killed Itachi!"
"Sasuke killed Itachi." The bluette retorted. "And Itachi had planned to die. That is no one's fault. It was his choice and dream."
Yuna opened her mouth to reply, but nothing came out. She was right, and they both knew it. The kitsune crossed her arms, glaring down at the floor, with a childish pout.
"What about what they've done to me? Mah." She hissed. "They attacked me, imprisoned me, they even tried to lie to me about who I was! How can you be their ally!?"
Konan rolled her eyes at the fiery red head's childishness. "Have you forgotten they also loved and protected you? They tried to give you a better life, one without pain and suffering."
Yuna stepped back when the woman made a move toward her. She was having a sudden lack of security being here, almost like she was in the house of an enemy.
"I can't believe you're taking their side!"
"Yuna, I'm not taking their side."
"Yes you ar. You chose them over this kyuubi!"
"That's not true." Konan disagreed, reaching out to the nine tailed beast.
She'd changed so much since their last meeting. The old kitsune would have run into her arms and smiled. This one hadn't so much as taken her hand. She was glad the kyuubi at least still wore the same uniform as her.
The kunoichi could see it under the Akatsuki cloak she wore. It looked a little more snug around her breast and parted over her stomach. The ame-nin's eyes went wide as she took a double take, realizing why the demon might be acting different.
Yuna stepped back from her hand, baring her teeth. Something the demoness had never done before.
"Yuna, please, you're not thinking straight. Your pregnancy hormones are probably clouding your thoughts." She said, understanding why the precious child would not relinquish her hate for Sasuke and Konoha.
She was carrying Itachi's child, and was being forced to raise it alone. No, not forced. Yuna didn't want anyone near her least connection to her lover. They had stolen him away, who was to say they wouldn't do the same with her baby.
"No! You chose Konoha over this kitsune!"
"Be calm, stress isn't good for the baby." Konan tried to explain, but the Akatsuki member wasn't listening.
She just wanted everything to go back to the way they were. Back before everyone started dying. Before Tobi had shown up. Before all the trouble started.
Tears sparked in the kitsune's crimson eyes, her body trembling, as she began to cry. This was the horrible feeling she'd been having. It was because Leader-sama had died.
This was all her fault.. If she had stayed in Konoha, she could have stopped all of this. She moved for the door when Konan attempted to comfort her. But the demon was done being comforted.
If she was going to survive on her own and protect Itachi's child, she couldn't rely on others for support. She'd have to walk her own path. She turned to leave when she remembered a small detail from her plans.
"Was Kisame-sempai killed in this battle..?" She asked, glancing over her shoulder. Her ears pricked with interest.
The kunoichi shook her head, a look of misery tearing at her face. "No... He is working with Madara. They accompanied by Zetsu and Uchiha Sasuke's team are what make up the new Akatsuki." She hesitated, before continuing. "I hope you don't plan on joining their forces."
The demon almost snickered, looking out into the pouring rain. "Mah. You know me better than that. This kyuubi will kill them before she joins them."
