letzter song by CROThe trailer park was a lot bigger than she had expected. Her new home was surrounded by open spaces, people reading the newspaper while sitting on camping chairs, barking dogs and a smell that she couldn't quite identify. It wasn't exactly nice, but still a lot better than what she'd escaped. At least that was what she told herself.
"It's the blue one, right over there", the chubby woman walking in front of her said, pointing at a particularly tiny trailer with almost no fenced space in front of it. Matilda gulped and pulled her luggage towards it, silently inspecting the trailers around her. So far, there was no one she deemed threatening, despite of what her parents had told her. She hated how she still fell for their manipulation, regardless of knowing better.
"Thank you. When's the first rent due?", she asked, turning to the woman again. She had a stack of papers in her hands which Matilda suspected to be handed to her in a minute. Oh, how she hated filling out formulas. To her surprise, the woman smiled brightly and pushed her glasses back up her nose.
"You're lucky. The landlord is currently trying to attract more potential renters, so the first month of living here will be free. After that, though, you'll have to transfer it every month on the third. Do you need help with taking your stuff in?" The woman looked around and it took Matilda a moment to realize that she was searching for someone to bring the rest of her luggage. She made a face at the thought of having been able to push all her belongings in one suitcase. It was quite a big suitcase, to be fair.
"No, I'm good", she stated and the woman nodded.
"Alright, then. Here are the keys. The landline will be installed in the following three days. Maybe I can talk the landlord into a reduce on the first rent for the trouble", she whispered with a small wink and dropped the keys into Matilda's open hand. She smiled and thanked her again. She waited until the woman – she had introduced herself, Matilda just hadn't listened – completely disappeared from her sight and then turned to the blue trailer again. Its color was only faintly there, partly hidden by brown rusty spots and a lot of tall grass surrounding almost its entire bottom half. Even though she would never admit it, she already missed not having to worry about gas or electricity bills, as well as owning a computer. But because her parents had not been fond of the idea of her moving out and therefore weren't helping her with any of the money, she'd had to leave a lot behind, realizing most of her stuff had never really been hers.
From the inside, the trailer actually looked fine. Of course, it was nothing compared to the mansion she had lived in with her parents, but because this actually belonged to her, it immediately took a special place in her heart.
It was divided into three different spaces, not leaving much up to imagination. A kitchen and eating space, a small bedroom and a bathroom. It felt cramped, but Matilda knew this was the only thing she could afford. She was glad about the free month. It would give her enough time to find a job, so she wouldn't be entirely reliant on the gnarly 300$ she received from the government once a month.
