fool by FRANKIE COSMOSWhen Matilda'd thought the forest had been the most disgusting part of their journey, she had been wrong. Nancy's house was filthy – full of slimey black mud, dark dust and, most of all, vines.
"Might be time to get a maid, Wheeler", Robin mumbled as they followed Steve and the flashlight. Nancy didn't grin or smile. She looked rather uneasy. Probably had something to do with seeing her house like this, so different yet so similar.
"Come on, I don't want to stay here longer than we have to", she stated and turned to the stairs. Matilda, Robin and Eddie followed her, only Steve stayed behind.
In her room, Nancy immediately went for her wardrobe and took out a small pink box from the top shelf. As Robin and Eddie followed Nancy to one of the drawers to open it, Matilda sat down on the bed in exhaustion. The pain that exceeded from the wound on her waist had become bearable, but now her whole body was aching – probably from putting up with the dirty air and a flesh wound at the same time.
"Those aren't guns", Eddie commented as Nancy removed the wrapping paper. She looked confused and took the shoes out to see if her guns were underneath.
"These heels are a bit pointy but I was hoping for a deadly projectile", Robin muttered, seemingly hoping that Nancy was making a poor attempt at a joke.
"I— I don't understand", Nancy mumbled, not looking at anything in particular.
"Maybe you left them somewhere else", Eddie suggested nervously while subconsciously back up towards Matilda to check up on her. She flashed him a small smile as their eyes met, hoping to convince him of her well-being.
"There's a six-year-old in the house. I know where I keep my guns", Nancy hissed in response, still confusedly looking at the shoes, "And also, I threw these away years ago." Her eyes wandered to something next to the box Matilda couldn't see and then Nancy held up a stack of revision cards. Nancy looked entirely confused, while the others didn't seem to be catching on. Matilda saw the smeared ink and recognized a couple of the words. Her face went blank.
"I get that grades are important, but perhaps studying can wait until we get out of here?", Robin asked nervously, probably thinking Nancy was going crazy. Matilda got up and walked to the others, then took the cards out of Nancy's hand. She flashed the girl an understanding look.
"These are sophomore chemistry", Matilda stated and Nancy nodded rapidly.
"And this— this wallpaper, this is old wallpaper. A— and this mirror, this went to a yard sale", Nancy continued, slowly painting a picture of what was going on, "And... you. You're not supposed to be here. No, I gave you to cousin Joanna two years ago." She'd taken a stuffed rabbit from her bed and now walked to her night stand. It held a lamp and a small yellow book which Nancy grabbed hectically. She went through the pages, looking for something specific.
