fade into you by MAZZY STAR

Matilda's body uncomfortably hit the ground and she groaned in pain. Part of her wanted to stay on the mattress and just close her eyes for good, but she forced herself to stay conscious – if that was even possible to force.

"Eddie, stop!", Dustin yelled while simultaneously pulling Matilda up. She couldn't hide the angry tears in her eyes as she stared up to the gate, through which she could see Eddie dragging the mattress to the side. "What are you doing?"

Eddie threw the end of the rope to the side, put the shield on his back and looked up. His eyes met Matilda's and for a moment neither of them said anything. She tried to get herself to speak, but all she could do was stare at him in disbelief.

"I'm buying more time", he then said quietly and left. Matilda felt her body sink to the ground. Her vision blurred. Nothing made sense anymore.

"Matilda! Come on, we gotta— Matilda!", Dustin cried, desperately trying to get her to stand up. She shook her head as a way to get her thoughts sorted and finally gave in to Dustin's pulls.

"We need to— He can't—", Dustin muttered under tears which Matilda wiped away with a sturdy expression. Her brows were furrowed as she looked at Dustin and then at the gate.

"This asshole needs to get his shit rocked", she then hissed and pulled the nearest chair towards her. Dustin immediately obliged and tried finding a good position to push her up to the hole in the ceiling.

Matilda put her foot on his interlocked hands and reached for the edges of the gate. It felt slimy and wet, what made Matilda gag a little.

"Just a little more!", she yelled with a pressed voice as she tried to push herself over. Without Dustin's help, she would've fallen back down immediately, if she'd even made it up until that point.

Dustin groaned loudly and gave her one last push, which finally got her up far enough to be pulled from the other side. She tried to shield her head and her neck while falling but still landed on her shoulder, causing it to crack once more. The shotgun uncomfortably pressed into her back as she rolled around and it took her over ten seconds to sit up.

"You okay?", she heard Dustin yell and put her thumbs up in response, She couldn't worry about him. For all she cared, he should stay on the other side, safe and sound from whatever crazy bullshit was going on outside.

She hissed in pain as she got up and held her arm as she approached the door, anxiously anticipating what she would see outside of the trailer.

The moment she reached the stairs she felt her lungs fill with air and she couldn't help but sigh in relief when she saw Eddie climbing on a bike, still unhurt.
